SCHOOL/UNIT DESCRIPTION:
The Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) is a rapidly growing institute within the Dean of Research. As an independent research institute, HAI’s mission is to advance AI research, education, policy, and practice to improve the human condition. POSITION SUMMARY:
We are hiring one (1) full time (100% FTE), benefits-eligible, fixed term Web Designer 2 for two (2) years. Although not guaranteed, there will be potential for an extension/renewal following the initial 2 years contingent upon additional funding commitments and/or programmatic needs. This position will be based on Stanford’s main campus and will be considered for an option of hybrid work arrangement, subject to operational need. At the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI we have developed a strong visual brand identity that reflects and encompasses our principles of being innovative, human-centered, diverse, inclusive, and multidisciplinary. We are seeking a skilled web designer who can oversee our website and create engaging and well-executed on-brand digital experiences to strengthen our digital presence and evolve our brand. The ideal candidate will be an excellent listener and collaborative team member who works to understand goals, requirements and complex information and then translates that information into on-point design deliverables that clearly convey the message in support of the objectives.

Reporting to the Managing Editor, the Web Designer will design, build, and implement a range of design deliverables as well as update, maintain and evolve both the HAI website and associated web properties. The Web Designer will also lead as subject matter expert guiding UX design best practices, and will measure and report out on website engagement.  Duties to include:

  • Serve as the main point of contact to field and respond to website update requests and to troubleshoot issues.
  • Manage or create new websites associated with HAI.
  • Develop with the Communications team custom, on-brand graphics packages for events and major announcements.
  • Track, manage and report on website analytics and make resulting recommendations.
  • Create branded document templates and apply content to existing design templates.
  • Assist in researching and procuring images for HAI website and other digital properties.

CORE DUTIES:

  • Create superior user experiences through the design of elegant interfaces.
  • Collaborate with co-workers and stakeholders to synthesize requirements into sketches, wireframes, and design mockups.
  • Conduct formal and informal usability testing, and respond to results.
  • Build HTML and CSS components of web properties adhering to modern best practices.
  • Create design prototypes, and collaborate with developers on components requiring more advanced scripting and programming.
  • Collaborate with IT Services, University Communications, and Online Accessibility Program staff to ensure group's compliance with policies and standards around identity graphics, web content, and online accessibility.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience or a combination of education and relevant experience. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong design and usability skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of modern design concepts and solutions and usability best practices for all web devices.
  • Proficiency with browser and device differences and idiosyncrasies.
  • Proficiency in HTML and CSS.
  • Knowledge of user profiling, usability testing, and quality assurance practices.
  • Knowledge of web analytics tools and related analyses and reporting.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of different content management systems and ability to learn new ones.
  • Proficiency in graphic design software including Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and other visual design tools.
  • Good working knowledge of Google Analytics, tracking KPIs, and driving actionable goals and recommendations based on data.
  • Good working knowledge of JavaScript and JavaScript libraries.
  • Experience with digital marketing spanning email, social media and other channels.
  • Experience creating charts, graphs or illustrations for presentations, social media and the web

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Frequently sitting.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, use a telephone.
  • Rarely writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Strong visual acuity

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May work extended hours and weekends.

The expected pay range for this position is $90,000.00 to $114,000.00 per annum.

Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
