ABOUT STANFORD UNIVERSITY AND RESIDENTIAL & DINING ENTERPRISES:

Stanford University, located between San Francisco and San Jose in the heart of California's Silicon Valley, is one of the world's leading teaching and research universities. Residential & Dining Enterprises (R&DE), the largest auxiliary organization at Stanford University, supports the academic mission of the University by providing high-quality services to students and other members of the university community. The department has an annual operating budget of over $350M, operates 24/7/365, and oversees a $3B asset portfolio comprising a 7 million sq. ft. physical plant across the campus. In autumn quarter of the 2021-22 academic year, R&DE will return to providing housing for over 13,000 students and dependents, serving meals at 17 dining halls, 12 retail locations, and operating athletic concessions and conference operations. Additionally, R&DE comprises 900 FTE staff in the following divisions: Student Housing Operations, Stanford Dining, Stanford Hospitality & Auxiliaries, Stanford Conferences, Maintenance Operations and Capital Projects, and a team of R&DE strategic business partners: Finance & Administration, Information Technology, Human Resources, and Strategic Communications.

This role is currently designated as hybrid and may provide incumbents with flexibility for partial telecommuting.

JOB PURPOSE:

Under minimal supervision, perform the most complex technical work in a wide range of environmental, health, and safety disciplines to ensure a safe work environment and to achieve compliance with the university's environmental, health, and safety standards and governmental regulatory requirements.

CORE DUTIES*:

  • Work under consultative or self-initiated direction to develop, implement, and maintain programs, systems, and procedures necessary to ensure the overall safety and health of employees and the community.
  • Act as a lead or technical expert, providing functional direction and training in the overall application of emergency preparedness programs.
  • Conduct comprehensive, independent compliance assurance reviews of environmental, health, and safety policies and procedures; prepare accompanying management reports, documentation, and evaluations.
  • Monitor and prevent potential hazards and unsafe conditions that could be present in the work area.
  • Recommend and implement improvements in processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment to minimize the hazard potential.
  • May lead a team responsible for developing and implementing environmental and/or safety programs.

ADDITIONAL CORE DUTIES:

  • Be available to assist and respond to emergencies virtually and/or physically on short notice.
  • Lead the department’s effort in emergency preparedness, developing processes and protocols for all employees.
  • Develop and implement robust training and exercises to prepare the department for a large disaster.
  • Support the management of the Departmental Operations Center (DOC) functions when the campus executes its command structure during an emergency.
  • Coordinate all preparedness initiatives with campus partners.
  • Manage, track, and purchase emergency food, water, supplies, AEDs, and trauma kits.
  • Propose, manage, and plan strategic budgets and purchases across multiple fiscal years.
  • Manage a group of Emergency Response Supervisors and provide direction during their activation, as necessary.
  • Collaborate with each division within R&DE to develop a comprehensive business continuity plan.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in arts/science in related allied/scientific field and seven years progressively responsible experience in occupational safety and health, emergency response/management, environmental science, and/or allied/scientific field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct effective health and safety surveys, quantitative and qualitative exposure/ risk assessments, and most complex data analyses; ability to provide recommendations for exposure/risk control.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to maintain current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits) and university policies.
  • Working knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and potential impact on assigned work area(s).
  • Demonstrated supervisory/coaching expertise.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequently stand, sit, and perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Occasionally use a telephone, write by hand.
  • Rarely kneel, crawl, climb ladders, reach/work above shoulder, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, write by hand, sort and file paperwork or parts, operate foot and/or hand controls, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh 40 pounds or more.
  • Ability to maintain a valid non-commercial California Driver's license. 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Must wear personal protective equipment as defined/required by job assignments.
  • May rarely be exposed to high voltage electricity, radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers, noise > 80dB TWA, allergens/biohazards/chemicals /asbestos, or heavy metals.
  • May rarely work in confined spaces or at heights ≥10 feet.

  • When conducting university business, must comply with the California Vehicle Code and Stanford University driving requirements.

The expected pay range for this position is $143,000 to $153,000 per annum.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
