To be successful in this role you must bring:

  • Minimum of four years of experience in the trade or a combination of education and relevant experience.  At minimum two years of plumbing work experience on water and sewer systems is preferred.
  •  Training and working knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in the plumbing trade and the ability to do plumbing work as described above
  • Working knowledge of all the systems’ components described above.
  • Working knowledge of confined space, CA OSHA, and CA DHS regulations
  • Must have valid and current CA driver’s license Class B, qualified and experienced with air brakes or ability to obtain within 1 year.
  • Required California Water Environment Association (CWEA) Collection System Maintenance Certificate grade 1 or above or ability to obtain within 18 months.
  • Comfortable using technology like mobile devices and computer for time reporting, word processing, and facilities work order processing.
  • Must be willing/available to respond to emergency calls any hour of the day or night.
  • Must be able to work in any kind of weather for hours at a time to address a water system emergency.
  • Must be willing/able to wear a respirator and pass annual pulmonary function medical and auditory testing, fitness testing and training.
  • Must be willing/able to wear personal protective equipment (hard hat, gloves, apron, welding hood, safety shoes, safety glasses, masks and hearing protection).
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with staff, vendors, and contractors
  • Must be able to deal politely with customers affected by system problems and operations
  • Must be able to work cooperatively with fellow crew members
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task.

Physical Requirements*

Must be up to date on Tetanus, Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B vaccinations.

• Constantly twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp forcefully.

• Frequently stand/walk, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

• Occasionally kneel/crawl, reach/work above shoulders, light/fine grasping tools, lift/carry/pull/push objects greater than 40 pounds with assistance.

• Rarely climb, perform seated work, perform desk-based work, use a telephone, sort/file paperwork or parts.

• Occasionally operate foot and/or hand-controlled equipment.

• Operate special machinery i.e. mechanical and hydro sewer equipment.

• Ability to perform strenuous and repetitive work.

• Must be able to lift at least 40 lbs.

Working Conditions

  • Available to work overtime and may be available for callbacks.
  • May perform work outside in variable weather conditions.
  • Ability to work with various smells/odors that come from grease traps, interceptors, and other equipment.
  • May be exposed to high voltage electricity, radiation or electromagnetic fields, noise >80db, allergens/biohazards/chemicals/asbestos.
  • May be required to work in confined spaces and at heights greater than 10 feet.
  • May work in extreme heat and cold temperatures.
  • May work with lab waste system.
  • Required to wear appropriate uniform.

  • When conducting university business, must comply with the California Vehicle Code and Stanford University driving requirements.
