Anticipated Work Schedule: Monday-Friday (6:45-3:15PM or 7:00-3:30PM)

 

The Veterinary Service Center (VSC) within the Department of Comparative Medicine is currently seeking a Veterinary Technician II. The Veterinary Service Center (VSC) at Stanford University provides Laboratory Animal Care and operates within the Department of Comparative Medicine. We are fully accredited by the Association for Accreditation and Assessment of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC). Our vision is to pioneer in laboratory animal care, driving research innovations from bench to bedside. The following responsibilities will be expected to be independently performed with minimal instruction:

 

Animal Care- Maintenance of the health of research animal colony including: a) Follow-up on morbidities submitted including initial assessment and physical examination of animals, implementing first aid and acquisition of biologic samples and contact of Principal Investigator or Responsible Person to obtain permission for diagnostic work-up and/or treatment. b) Administer veterinarian prescribed medications by parenteral and enteral routes. c) Administer therapeutic modalities such as bandaging, splints, fluid therapy, oxygen therapy, safe application of external heat source, etc. d) Obtain and submit diagnostic samples to laboratory. e) Obtain diagnostic radiographs.

 

Intensive Care - a) Observe general health and behavior as well as vital signs of each animal. b) Administer prescribed medications as directed. c) Perform emergency life support and first aid to animals as appropriate. d) Keep Veterinarian and Investigator apprised of each animal's condition. e) Sedate or anesthetize commonly used animal species. f) Sanitize ICU cages and room and restock supplies as needed.

 

Monitoring/Investigator Support - a) Monitor the use of animals by VSC employees and research staff to assure compliance with Federal/State/University policies. Be able to take immediate action to prevent inhumane treatment of animals. Notify supervisor and/or veterinarian of compliance problems. b) Aid investigators with experimental procedures such as animal handling and restraint, venipuncture and anesthetic techniques.

 

Medical Record Keeping - a) Keep accurate, timely documentation of all health care records, laboratory results, special requests, supply orders, investigator charges, and Drug Enforcement Agency records for controlled substances. b) All records will be current as to time that task was completed and thorough as to the observations made. c) Charges will be made for non­spontaneous problems or illnesses as determined by veterinarian and documented as to quantity and type of supplies dispensed or utilized and technician time taken to accomplish task and record finding and/or communicate to the responsible person.

 

Additional Duties - a) Will be responsible for record keeping, inventory, storage and disposal of all pharmaceuticals used. b) Ordering of pharmaceutical supplies and equipment as directed by Supervisor. c) Compiling of Veterinary charges. d) Laundry.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

·       RVT degree and 2 years’ experience or equivalent education and experience (i.e. 4 years of experience in Animal Research Laboratory).

·       AALAS certification.

·       Knowledge of care and use of all medical equipment and instruments used by the Veterinary Care Staff.

·       General knowledge and skills pertaining to induction and monitoring of general anesthesia; aseptic technique; emergency cardiopulmonary resuscitation, implementation of life support drugs, and equipment; use of radiology equipment and ability to take diagnostic films; medical terminology; the biology and physiology of all species of animals used in the research facility; nursing care and proper handling and restraint of all animals.

·       General knowledge of zoonotic diseases.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Two years of laboratory experience or two years of college coursework in the scientific discipline a combination of equivalent education and relevant work experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

Work at the Life Science Technician II level requires experience and ability beyond that required for the Life Science Technician I, including increased technical skills and problem-solving abilities. Must be able to read, write, understand, communicate and follow written and oral instructions in English.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

·       Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand.

·       Ability to stand and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.

·       Occasionally lift and handle materials up to 10 pounds

·       Rarely carry/pull and/or push up to 20 pounds

·       Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.

·       Position may require repetitive motion.

Additional PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

·       May need to lift and carry loads up to 50 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work occurs in a research laboratory environment. Depending on research, may work in the vicinity of animals, chemicals, gasses, or hazardous materials. Expected to follow all safety requirements and procedures including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) if required.

Additional and/or Unusual WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

·       Working with and handling animals potentially infected with diseases transmittable to humans, large farm animals, random source dogs with unknown medical histories, and the potential of receiving wounds inflicted by various animals.

·       Working with radioactive and/or biohazardous materials.

·       Work occurs in a secured facility, in an environment where animals are used for teaching and research.

·       Expected to follow all safety requirements and procedures.

·       The incumbent should be free of animal-related allergies.

·       The incumbent will be required to complete an initial and annual Occupational Health Surveillance questionnaire and may be required to undergo a physical examination and/or immunizations.

·       Must observe and support good health and safety practices regarding the use of chemicals and equipment.

·       Responsible for the wearing, use and proper care of uniforms, supplies, and equipment provided by VSC. Including uniforms required for health & safety purposes.

·       Valid California Non-commercial Class C Driver's license.

·       May be required to work variable shifts, days of week, overtime, in various locations, evenings and weekends, including holidays, sometimes in inclement weather conditions. 

WORK STANDARDS:

The expected pay range for this position is $37 (Step 1) to $44.55 (Step 10) per hour. Placement in the range is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.
