The Stanford University Network (SUNet) Backbone Engineer position will be focused on the design, deployment and operational support of all SUNet infrastructure technologies including but not limited to: core routing, switching, firewall, load balancing and Virtual Private Network (VPN) services. With little guidance the engineer will complete daily operations focused tasks such as troubleshooting, both with infrastructure and clients, manage projects of varying scale for network related services (data, voice, AV, etc…) as well as collaborate with and assist other members of the University IT and Stanford IT community.
This is a hybrid eligible position.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience or a combination of education and relevant experience. In-depth experience with the deployment and operational maintenance of large-scale EVPN-VXLAN network implementations, and all the aforementioned and related network technologies.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with ability to communicate complex technical issues to non-technical users.
- Current knowledge of and experience with network security fundamentals and practices, necessary to protect client and organizational data.
- Strong analytical skills for diagnosing network issues, utilizing tools such as packet analyzers and network monitoring systems, and implementing effective solutions quickly to minimize downtime and client impact.
- Proven ability to manage and potentially lead projects effectively, coordinate with cross-functional teams, and communicate technical information clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
- Familiarity with cloud services (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and their networking components— with a fundamental understanding of both the integration and support of related networking solutions with on-premises infrastructure.
Certifications and Licenses:
- Related network technology certifications are desired but not mandatory.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
- Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
- Frequently sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
- Occasionally stand/walk, kneel/crawl, and use a telephone.
- Rarely climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach/work above shoulders, grasp forcefully, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to or <40 pounds.
- Requires good visual acuity.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
- May be exposed to electricity at greater than 240 volts, lasers and noise > 80dB TWA.

The expected pay range for this position is $151,008 – $181,417 per annum.

This is a Hybrid role, with a minimum of two days on-site. On-site days will be coordinated and scheduled with the hiring Manager.
