The Stanford University Department of Public Safety (SUDPS) exists to provide a safe, secure atmosphere which is conducive to freedom of expression and movement, for all people and their property at Stanford University, within the constraints of the Federal, State, and local laws and ordinances. Assigned to the Support Services Division and working under minimal supervision, the SUDPS Special Projects Program Manager will manage a wide range of projects using strategic, creative, and innovative skills to improve existing department functions and resolve new areas of concern in support of the department’s safety mission. Work is performed autonomously, without specific instructions or prescribed procedures, requiring the ability to conduct research to identify and develop responses to specific unmet needs while exercising discretion and judgment regarding matters of significance to the department and university.
The specific projects and tasks that may be assigned to this position are subject to change based on department need. Examples of possible assignments include:
Manage cross-agency data projects (city/county/state/federal partners), including data sharing agreements, governance, and quality control.
Review mutual-aid or partner-agency documentation (e.g., fire/EMS response, major incidents) and ensure compliance with standards.
Coordinate and track compliance-related submissions (e.g., state crime reporting, federal grants, accreditation standards, audit requests).
Support Clery-related operational processes (as assigned), including documentation tracking, report preparation support, and coordination with campus partners to ensure timely inputs.
Compile, validate, and analyze crime/traffic/use-of-force/calls-for-service data to support mandated reporting and executive dashboards.
Develop and implement department policies and programs (e.g., UAS/drone operations, counter-drone detection, body-worn camera, records retention).
Draft command-level memos, policy updates, briefing materials, and standard operating procedures based on research and stakeholder input.
Conduct research on best practices (training, de-escalation, community policing, event security, emergency management, Clery compliance) and propose solutions.
Draft and maintain policies and procedures.
Assist with grant support (data, narratives, deliverable tracking) when applicable.
Coordinate and evaluate the effectiveness of community outreach and crime prevention activities.
Provide emergency management support.
Support the department’s training manager with the delivery of training; etc.
The successful incumbent will manage multiple priorities simultaneously; balance a demanding workload independently; and exercise critical and data analytical skills.
The incumbent will work collaboratively and effectively with department and university leaders as well as external providers to implement security related technologies or programs that meet the university's mission and reflect its values. A deep understanding and appreciation of the culture and operations of the department and the university are essential.
This individual will be a part of the department’s emergency response and special events management; the successful candidate will be familiar with the operations and requirements of a police/public safety department.
All benefits-eligible members of the Stanford Department of Public Safety are considered essential (or required) university personnel for purposes of managing emergencies and critical incidents impacting significant portions of the campus. As such, all benefits-eligible DPS personnel are expected to respond to campus during a major emergency. In conjunction with other DPS personnel, the incumbent may be responsible for implementing ICS during large scale and/or high-profile special events and critical incidents.
Shift work (days, evenings, weekends, including Holidays) and outdoor work may be required. This position is in-person (not hybrid or remote) and subject to shift work.

Lead strategic planning and analysis for complex functions or programs with significant business, regulatory and/or technical challenges requiring subject matter expertise. May provide development of program or function from initial concept to implementation.
Manage the administration and evaluation of programs or functions.
Oversee the interpretation, implementation and compliance with policies and regulations.
Recommend actions and/or resolve complex issues that often span organizational boundaries.
Represent the program or function at the university level and/or to external/internal stakeholders and constituencies.
Develop and manage outreach strategy that includes relationship development, communications, and compliance.
May develop and/or oversee budgets; manage finances including monitoring, analyzing, forecasting, and reporting.
Assess training needs and may develop associated training.
May direct and/or supervise others.
Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree and eight years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

The expected pay range for this position is $162,809 - $197,109 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
