Stanford’s Rural Education Action Program (REAP) is seeking a Social Science Research Professional I to provide research assistance related to our work in rural China. REAP is an impact evaluation organization that aims to inform sound education, health and nutrition policy in China. REAP’s goal is to help children from vulnerable communities in China enhance their human capital and overcome obstacles to education so that they can escape poverty and better contribute to China’s developing economy. REAP is a program within the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies.

 

Position Summary: The candidate will work with REAP’s faculty, staff and international partners. This position requires occasional travel to China, fluency in both written and verbal Mandarin Chinese, proven English writing skills, strong organizational and interpersonal skills, as well as a firm understanding of early childhood health and development.

 

The candidate will help to organize and develop project materials, especially related to REAP’s work on early childhood health and development. Responsibilities will include interacting with academic partners at Stanford and team members at other universities, liaising with translation companies and other third-party entities to meet project needs, developing video content, and general project management. May also work with students to oversee simple tasks and complete assignments. The candidate will also be asked to assist with article submission and formatting, conference submissions, and managing IRB protocol review.

 

This is a 100% FTE fixed-term, benefits-eligible position. The term concludes one year from the start date, and may be extended based on program need and funding availability.

In this role, you will:

  • Plan and perform research tasks requiring initiative and judgment by applying basic knowledge and understanding of scientific theory when precedents do not provide specific guidance. General instruction provided by the supervisor as needed. May interpret study results in collaboration with supervisor or PI.

  • Participate in the development and administration of survey instruments and rating scales requiring judgment in applying non-routine procedures. Analyze and summarize results for review with supervisor. Audit the accuracy and validity of data

  • Review and audit case report forms for completion and accuracy with source documents, and ensure compliance with research protocols.

  • Identify, select, extract and summarize data and structured information. Present summary of findings to supervisor.

  • Conduct literature searches, and write literature summaries and manuscripts, requiring preliminary judgments after the supervisor outlines conceptual approach.

  • Build and organize data as requested by principal investigator or supervisor; use common statistical programs requiring the application of job control language in generating and organizing data.

  • Adapt new, nonstandard methods outlined by supervisor in designing and evaluating phases of research projects, (i.e., educational materials, questionnaires, strategies for recruitment, data quality control procedures and processes). May follow up with Institutional Review Board (IRB) to ensure renewals are approved and completed, seeking guidance where necessary.

  • Assist with development, communication and design of research findings to internal and external audiences, which may include web updates, social media, and/or white papers, for use in recruitment, educational, or awareness of programs, with guidance from supervisor.

  • May orient and train new staff or students. 



To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Bachelor of Arts degree in applicable social science related field, or combination of education and relevant experience in an applicable social science.

  • Spoken and written fluency in Mandarin Chinese is required. The position requires occasional travel to China.

  • General understanding of scientific theory and methods, typically gained through completion of an undergraduate degree in a related field.

  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs.

  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.

  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work with human study participants.


In addition, preferred requirements include:
  • Master’s degree is preferred.

  • Experience working on international projects and coordinating amongst diverse stakeholders highly desired. Demonstrated experience with design software, video development software, Stata preferred.
