The Cardiovascular Engineering lab (Dr. Michael Ma) and the Cardiovascular Biomechanics Computation Lab at Stanford University (Dr. Marsden, PI) performs computational modeling of the cardiovascular system in support of surgical planning in pediatric and adult patients, medical device design, and basic research in cardiovascular biomechanics and mechanobiology.  Stanford University is seeking a Science and Engineering Associate 2 to perform more complex functions and activities involved in defined research projects, and independently conduct a portion of the research project(s). 

Duties include*: 

  • Independently conduct a portion of the research project(s). Make recommendations on experimental design and/or research direction to principal investigator. 
  • Independently conduct complex experiments to gather data for a portion of a major research project. 
  • Interpret and analyze results, often where few guidelines exist, and make modifications to existing procedures and protocols. 
  • Participate in multidisciplinary teams across different faculties or schools.
  • Perform ongoing literature review to remain current with new procedures and related research; apply to ongoing research and development of new protocols. 
  • Contribute to the preparation of papers for publication, especially in the results section, and to publication of findings. Present ongoing work to colleagues and/or academic conferences. 
  • Oversee supply and equipment budget under supervision of principal investigator or business manager.
  • Work with health and safety department to ensure lab complies with regulations and all required trainings. 
  • Supervise (either formally or informally) staff or students as needed, including oversight and direction on techniques, as well as consultation on project work. Serve as a technical resource for other research staff.
  • Oversee the daily activities of the laboratory including lab maintenance; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed. May assist with purchasing laboratory equipment.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Disclaimer: A strong candidate does not need to possess ALL of the following qualifications, but should have at least some of these skills:

  • Significant prior research and management experience, preferably in a cardiovascular-related field. However, the ability to think critically and carry out experiments independently is required.
  • Background in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, bioengineering, computer science or related field. Already acquired or Interest in pursuing medicine and or graduate degree is preferred.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals with a BS or MS in engineering or related field.
  • Basic software engineering skills such as programming in Python and / or Matlab.
  • Familiarity with CAD software or 3D modeling software.
  • Familiarity with image analysis (3D Slicer, Mimics) or medical imaging (optional).
  • Experience with engineering simulations or analysis methods such as finite element methods or computational fluid dynamics (Simvascular).
  • If coming from an engineering-oriented background, basic knowledge of anatomy/physiology are recommended. 
  • Advanced writing and reading ability, which could be demonstrated via prior publications.
  • Knowledge of cardiovascular/cardiopulmonary anatomy & physiology. Developmental biology knowledge may also be beneficial as our work focuses on congenital heart diseases.
  • Prior experience leading a team and project management working in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Develop efficient workflows for performing computational modeling and simulation in a fast paced clinical setting. 
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to implement quality assurance protocols for image segmentation and simulation results. 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, or related quantitative field with introductory computer programming skills demonstrated through research, coursework and/or industry experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills of advanced scientific or engineering principles and practices. 
  • Demonstrated experience applying complex scientific and engineering principles and performing special technical services involving both development and performance.
  • Ability to maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.
  • Experience with computer programming or software engineering demonstrated through coursework, research experience and / or relevant industry experience. 
  • Ability to independently carry out computer programming tasks such as writing Python scripts for data format conversion, extracting data from a data repository, or automating data workflows.   
  • Demonstrated ability to review research proposals, evaluate research capabilities, and make recommendations. 
  • Demonstrated ability to establish, communicate, and enforce compliance with health and safety policies and procedures. 
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 30 pounds.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, sit, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp forcefully.
  • Rarely kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), reach/work above shoulders, use a telephone, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, operate foot and/or hand controls, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May be exposed to high voltage electricity, radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers, noise > 80dB TWA, Allergens/Biohazards/Chemicals /Asbestos, confined spaces, working at heights, temperature extremes, heavy metals, unusual work hours or routine overtime and/or inclement weather. 
  • May require working in close proximity to blood borne pathogens.
  • May require work in an environment where animals are used for teaching and research.
  • Position may at times require the employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present. 
  • Employee must perform tasks that require the use of personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and shoes, protective clothing and gloves, and possibly a respirator. 
  • May require travel.

The expected pay range for this position is $122,929 to $145,389 per annum.
