Scanning Probe Microscopy Support Scientist

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree in related scientific field and four years of relevant work experience; or Master’s degree in a related scientific field and two years relevant experience; or PhD in related science field.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Demonstrated expert knowledge in the field of SPM with experience in light microscopy. A strong preference for a record of imaging, characterization and analysis of live cells and biological tissues including single molecule force spectroscopy.
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot SPM instruments, prepare SPM samples, design research methodology, and teach SPM concepts to a variety of audiences, and oversee a laboratory space or unit.
• Willingness to produce dedicated online and in-person AFM teaching material with interest and/or experience in exploring pedagogical methods.
• Facilitated workshops and demonstrations around SPM.
• Strong desire to work with varying scientific backgrounds and demonstrated ability to collaborate and communicate across disciplines.
• Experience overseeing the plan, design, and implementation of major scientific or engineering initiatives and ensuring project objective are met.
• Demonstrated ability to review research proposals, evaluate research capabilities, and make recommendations.
• Demonstrated ability to establish, communicate, and enforce compliance with health and safety policies and procedures.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise and train a diverse work staff.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

• Frequently grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds. 
• Occasionally stand/walk, sit, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp forcefully. 
• Rarely kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), reach/work above shoulders, use a telephone, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, operate foot and/or hand controls, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh <40 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• May require working in close proximity to blood borne pathogens.
• May require work in an environment where animals are used for teaching and research.
• Position may at times require the employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present. 
• Employee must perform tasks that require the use of personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and shoes, protective clothing and gloves, and possibly a respirator. 
• May require extended or unusual work hours based on research requirements and business needs.

The expected pay range for this position is $97,000 to $120,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
