JOB PURPOSE:
The Research Program Manager will play a critical role in supporting a new project with the mission to understand obstacles to achieving human security and prosperity associated with authoritarian governments’ means of coercion as well as identify opportunities to advance liberty and diminish authoritarian regimes’ coercive power. 

The Research Program Manager will work under the direction of the Senior Research Program Manager and Senior Fellow to implement and administer the vision, strategy, and goals of the program utilizing specialized knowledge in international security and related fields. The Research Program Manager will administer, support, and manage the program’s research projects and edit reports based on the program’s research. They will also coordinate the efforts of 1-2 student research assistants.

CORE DUTIES*:

  • Oversee and administer research activities by evaluating academic programs, making recommendations that impact policies and programs, and coordinating and implementing changes.
    • Oversee and implement an oral history project on which to base case studies for the development of program publications and series
  • Collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends to determine program effectiveness; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the program.
  • Write and edit content for proposals, web publications, and other program activities under the general direction of Senior Research Program Manager and Senior Fellow. Assist with the development of research grants, (i.e., may suggest new funding opportunities, write portions of grants, and/or summarize data for grant support). 
    • Work with the Hoover staff on developing multimedia products that are consistent with the project’s mission and Hoover’s mission to collect knowledge, generate ideas, and disseminate both in an effort to secure and safeguard peace for the American public and relevant international audience. 
    • Support the planning and operations of the program’s seminars and events
    • Format and copy edit research documents and publications
  • Represent the program or function as the key contact and subject matter expert within the department, unit or school and develop communications for internal and external constituencies. Organize and/or participate in outreach activities such as events, partnerships, fundraising, training, and conferences. Lead workshops and facilitate meetings. 
    • Plan and implement purpose-built seminars to augment research and to bridge scholarship into implementation with relevant policy makers and decision makers in the public and private sectors.
    • Attend relevant events at the Hoover Institution and on Stanford Campus on behalf of program leadership
  • Monitor expenses, budgets, and finances of the program. Make recommendations on funding based on program spend.
  • May oversee and train student workers
    • Direct research assistants in research projects including conferences and establishment of an oral history project

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree and two years of relevant experience or combination of education, training, and relevant experience. Degree in international relations, political science, history and area studies, or related field preferred. Program administration experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization. 
  • Ability to oversee and provide basic direction to staff.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Occasionally use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds.
  • Rarely sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds.
  • Ability to use voice to present information/communicate with others.
  • On-campus mobility.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May work extended hours, evenings or weekends.
  • May travel locally. 
  • Occasional overnight travel.


The expected pay range for this position is $88,861-$102,254 per annum.
