The following position will have the flexibility to be based anywhere in the U.S., for candidates who are willing to travel to the Stanford School of Medicine campus 5%-10% of the time, as needed.
This will be a 2-year fixed-term position with a possibility for extension based on performance, the availability of funding and programmatic needs.
The Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Research Data Scientist (Biostatistician 3) to join our dynamic team. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and managing emergency medicine population health and health services projects, with a focus on ensuring successful completion of extramurally funded research projects with diverse teams. The position will be primarily based in Dr. Michelle Lin’s and Dr. Maame Yaa Yiadom’s labs conducting NIH-funded research to improve emergency care delivery, outcomes, and health equity. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research that aims to improve emergency medical care and population health outcomes.
The successful candidate must be technically rigorous, possess exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail and have a track-record of excellence, innovation, and productivity in research. Further training beyond the postdoctoral training is desirable. Experience with study design, statistical inference/biostatistics, and independent data analysis skills are required. Experience with clinical billing claims data, machine learning, informatics, AI, and grant writing is attractive.
Duties include:
Lead the design and implementation of quantitative research studies related to emergency medicine and population health.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop and execute project plans, ensuring timely completion and delivery of project milestones.
Coordinate scientific activities, schedule meetings, and develop agendas for meetings.
Train and supervise staff, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and research assistants.
Contribute to grant writing to support ongoing and future research initiatives.
Overseeing the development of study protocols and data use agreements, including coordinating regulatory approval from the institutional review boards to assure regulatory compliance.
Oversee lower-level staff on quality control.
Oversee lower-level staff on creation of analytic files.
Identify appropriate statistical tools for analysis.
Implement data analysis through statistical programming.
Consult with investigators and others on appropriate statistical approaches to data analyses; assist in study design.
Develop oral and written dissemination of findings for conference presentations and peer-reviewed journal articles.
Mentor clinical investigators on relevant research methods.
Implement studies to address statistical issue arising from collaborations.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Ph.D. or equivalent degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, health policy, health economics.
Proven track record of managing complex research projects from conception to completion (e.g. peer-reviewed publications and references).
3-5 years of work experience in an academic setting and/or research institution.
Experience with machine learning, informatics, and artificial intelligence.
Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and assign work to others.
Ability to take initiative and ownership of projects.
Experience with study design, statistical inference/biostatistics, and independent data analysis skills.
Experience with clinical billing claims data, machine learning, informatics, and AI, is attractive.
Possess exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail and have a track-record of excellence, innovation, and productivity in research.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Master's degree in biostatistics, statistics or related field and at least 5 years of experience or Ph.D. in biostatistics, statistics or related field.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
Proficient in at least two of R, SAS, SPSS, or STATA.
Skills in descriptive analysis, modeling of data, and graphic interfaces.
Outstanding ability to communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Demonstrated excellence in at least one area of expertise, which may include coordinating studies; statistical methodology such as missing data, survival analysis, statistical genetics, or informatics; statistical computing; database design (e.g., expertise in RedCAP or MySQL); graphical techniques (e.g., expertise in Illustrator).
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
Frequently perform desk based computer tasks, seated work and use light/ fine grasping.
Occasionally stand, walk, and write by hand, lift, carry, push pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

This role is open to candidates anywhere in the United States. Stanford University has five regional pay structures. The compensation for this position will be based on the location of the successful candidate. The expected pay range for this position is $144,782 to $171,091 per annum (within 10 Bay Area counties) or $120,157 to $154,319 per annum (all other regions). Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
