Precourt Institute for Energy

As part of the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, the Precourt Institute for Energy concentrates the talents of the University on energy research and education, from basic science and technology to policy and business. We disseminate research results and help the University develop energy-literate leaders as part of its educational mission. We work across campus in all seven of Stanford’s schools. We also build collaborations globally with industry, other research institutions, government, and civic organizations in pursuit of sustainable, affordable, secure energy for all people.

The Sustainable Finance Initiative

Announced in the Fall of 2018, the Sustainable Finance Initiative (SFI) works with public, private and development institutions to engage Stanford researchers in developing the finance and policy tools needed for the transition toward a decarbonized and climate-resilient global economy. Housed at the Precourt Institute for Energy, SFI brings Stanford’s capacity to generate and apply knowledge across finance, economics, business and law to critical challenges in need of tailored and site-specific solutions. Our faculty, fellows and students work in teams with external partners and local collaborators.

Research Analyst (Climate Risk)

Stanford’s Sustainability Finance Initiative (SFI) seeks a talented, highly motivated researcher with a background in finance or economics for a full time, 9-month fixed term role with the possibility of renewal based on additional funding and operational need. Under the guidance and supervision of SFI the Fellow will investigate various approaches to climate risk management. The work will include investigation and assessment of the current landscape of insurance, financial markets and policy. Particular areas of focus may include wildfire risk management models and methods, persistence and viability of carbon offsets, novel approaches to climate risk transfer and management, understanding interactions between various stakeholders in risk management policy design.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities Required and Preferred Qualifications

• Assist in designing experiments, exercising independent initiative and judgment gained from completing a variety of high-level assignments, including activities such as defining variables, formulating hypotheses, and selecting subjects, sources of information, or planning and coordinating experimental protocols.
• Adapt or work out the details of new, nonstandard procedures, with the supervisor providing only general guidance and suggestions.
• Interpret, synthesize, and analyze data using scientific or statistical techniques.
• Solve problems and make decisions which affect the direction of the research and result in independent contributions to the overall project.
• Select and apply standard calculations and formulas independently to compile data or process documents; often serve as a resource for research methods and numerical analyses.
• Co-author sections of research publications and regulatory reports as needed.
• Complete project-related administrative and budgetary responsibilities of a limited scope as needed.
• Supervise staff or students as needed, including oversight and instruction on techniques, as well as consultation on project work.
