The department is the steward for a $1.8 billion asset portfolio covering 1/3 of Stanford’s campus and has a $272 million annual operating budget for FY17. R&DE comprises 800+ staff in the following divisions: The Office of the Senior Associate Vice Provost (SAVP Office), Student Housing, Stanford Dining, Stanford Hospitality & Auxiliaries, Stanford Conferences, and a team of four R&DE strategic business partners: Finance & Administration, Human Resources, Information Technology, and Strategic Communications. R&DE houses

13,000+ students and their dependents while serving over 6.5 million meals annually to students, conference, catering, retail, and concession guests and annually hosts a combined 52,000 guests in the Stanford Guest House and on-campus in Stanford Conferences.

 

Your specific responsibilities include:

  • Employees at this level will work closely with shop manager in planning job tasks, determining job scope, crew sizes, equipment needs, safety considerations; under the manager’s direction, will have authority to determine means and methods in performing assigned work tasks
  • Employees at this level will provide technical guidance/input on new construction and renewal projects scopes
  • Employees at this level have advisory authority over other employees and are expected to exercise independent judgment on final decisions regarding quality or quantity of work produced by such employees.
  • Employees at this level will keep abreast of updates/changes in technologies and equipment related to assigned responsibility areas and will be instrumental in determining shop and work vehicle set-ups and equipment purchases
  • Respond to a wide range of service requests to install, troubleshoot, repair, calibrate, maintain and commission building systems and controls for assigned building systems and facilities i.e.  Plumbing and HVAC infrastructure, equipment, building systems including Cooling Towers, Control Systems; utilities that include Sanitary and Storm Lift stations, and other utilities. 
  • Perform rounds, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance.
  • Utilize equipment, electronic instruments for measuring temperature, pressure, pH, flow, power, current, voltage and other analytical signals.
  • Troubleshoot controllers and control systems related to assigned building systems.
  • Evaluate and implement new process control procedures and associated equipment.
  • Perform Predictive Maintenance on Mechanical and Electrical equipment
  • Document work on Computerized Maintenance Management System either directly or through workflow control team
  • Develop/Keep records and make oral and written reports of work performed.
  • Develop/Specify repair project work scopes with staff and vendors; submit parts orders; assist with defining standards in tools, equipment, work procedures, service vehicle equipment/set-ups. 
  • Some work is in hazardous areas, involving access to high voltage, chemicals, elevated work surfaces
  • Apply proper safety procedures for own work and work of assigned team.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • May work rotating shifts and overtime as operational needs dictate.
  • Ability to continuously learn new technologies in assigned fields

 

 

Additional duties

  • Process Control Instrument Technician Leads will serve as Primary Backup for each other during periods of absence of colleagues in this classification.
  • Experience in leading, training a team of journey-level technicians in assigned trades
  • Ability to assess troubleshooting/repair situations accurately, define repair scopes, determine optimal means/methods, set expectations for/monitor/provide constructive feedback on work quality,
  • Successful completion of applicable, recognized technical training, an apprenticeship program, or a combination of relevant education and experience in assigned technical fields
  • Knowledge of electronic, pneumatic, mechanical, and hydraulic controls systems
  • Ability to install, maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate pneumatic, mechanical, and electronic controls.
  • Proven experience demonstrating the ability to learn new systems, means and methods.
  • Ability to perform work involving wiring, soldering, welding, tube bending, pipe threading.
  • Ability to read and interpret piping, electronic and electrical schematic and wiring diagrams, building systems drawings.
  • Ability to identify hazards associated with work and to develop methods to mitigate those hazards.
  • Ability to utilize personal computer (or any other technology platform) and related software applications necessary to review system maps/records, submit and complete trouble tags, and access/review procedures, policies, other company documentation and reporting tools.
  • Must be able to resolve issues independently and in a timely manner.
  • Must have a working knowledge of the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70 E, applicable OSHA regulations, and codes associated with assigned trades.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with leading and training staff in assigned trades – troubleshooting, repair scope development, means/methods determination, crew sizing, time requirements for completing work, cost estimating for repairs, work quality assessment related to assigned-trades work performed in a large commercial/institutional environment having a strong customer service focus 
  • Possession of degrees, certifications, licenses, professional credentials related to assigned trades.  
  • Ability to promote diversity, multiculturalism, and inclusion in the execution of role.
  • Successfully combine hard (e.g., technical knowledge, critical and analytical thinking, problem solving) and soft skills (e.g., people skills, communication, such as active listening, interpersonal and intrapersonal relationship, teamwork,

Certifications and Licenses:

  • California non-commercial driver’s license.
  • Add applicable information such as technical fields
  • Preferred: Trade-specific credentials, certifications including Journeyman’s Card, Contractor’s License in assigned trade, technical college degrees in assigned field
