 The Department of Neurology at Stanford University is seeking a detail-oriented Research Physical Therapist to serve as a Clinical Evaluator for our Neuromuscular Research Team. The successful candidate will perform standardized functional assessments for clinical trials, ensuring high-quality data collection while providing compassionate interaction with patients and families.


Duties include*:

  • Provide subject matter expertise in a specialized area of physical therapy and within the scope of the California licensing Board and American Physical Therapy Association scope of practice. Evaluate, assess and provide therapeutic intervention plans for student athletes.  Evaluate and assess research participants (pediatric and adult) using disease-specific outcome measures
  • Adheres to research protocols, reliable research evaluations, data integration, critical thinking required for good clinical practice and data integrity
  • Provide ongoing verbal and written communication regarding the research evaluations evaluation, plan of care and participation status of student athletes.
  • Coordinate research visits and clinical care in collaboration with Principal Investigators, Neurologists, Clinical Research Coordinators (CRCs), and study sponsors. Participate in clinical teaching of multi-disciplinary teams and/or provide in-services to Stanford Medical Center staff. Mentor physical therapy students as appropriate.
  • Implement protocol-specific assessments and monitor participant safety during functional testing. Maintain strict adherence to study manuals and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Provide ongoing verbal and written communication regarding research evaluations, adverse events, data quality, and participant eligibility status to the study team. Complete research documentation and billing for services in compliance with Stanford Hospital and Clinics (SHC) billing practices and clinical trial budgets. Work on project(s) within the area of clinical specialty, such as abstract /manuscript submissions, protocol development, or reliability training.
  • May evaluate the educational needs of the staff regarding outcome measures and serve as a resource in meeting those needs.
  • May participate in the development and evaluation of patient care services, research workflows, and departmental policies and procedures to optimize trial efficiency.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's degree in physical therapy and three years experience working as a full-time Physical Therapist working with individuals with neurological or neuromuscular disease, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

  • May require ability to establish effective relationships and communication with staff, clinical leadership team, physicians, other health care professionals/collaborators and patients and families.
  • Proficiency (or certification) in administering NMD-specific standardized assessments.
  • May require ability to use advanced clinical reasoning in patient evaluations, treatment and research design
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary clinical and research team.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practice techniques and good clinical practice and research certifications required for research evaluations
  • Experience with Electronic Data Capture (EDC) systems (e.g., RedCap and a track record of good source documentation (ALCOA+ principles).
  • Willingness to undergo rigorous training and annual inter-rater reliability testing to maintain evaluator certification
  • GCP Training


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Two years experience working in an orthopedic outpatient clinic, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • Knowledge of Code of Ethics and performance standards as outlined by the American Physical Therapy Administration (APTA).
  • Working knowledge of HIPAA requirements.
  • Knowledge of basic business aspects of rehabilitation services including billing practices and equipment utilization for purposes.
  • Ability to relate to, develop and implement treatment plans.
  • Ability to accurately document evaluation, treatment and discharge plans.
  • Ability to utilize sound clinical reasoning to determine appropriate patient interventions; demonstrates good safety awareness, judgment and problem analysis and resolution.
  • Skill in planning and conducting a program of rehabilitative therapeutic activities specific to the population served.
  • May require knowledge of basic principles of clinical supervision and clinical instruction.
  • May require ability to clinically supervise, train and evaluate students/interns. May require ability to establish effective relationships and communication with staff, clinical leadership team, physicians, other health care professionals and patients and families.
  • May require ability to use advanced clinical reasoning in patient treatment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a functional team.

     

     

CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES:

  • Licensed Physical Therapist by the state of California.
  • First Aid, CPR and AED for health care providers.
  • HIPAA training.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently stand/walk, perform desk-based computer tasks, and lift up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach/work above shoulders, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Rarely kneel/crawl, use a telephone, write by hand, scrub, operate foot and hand controls, lift up to 40 pounds.

The expected pay range for this position is $114,205 to $134,214 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of the salary or hourly wage the university reasonably expects to pay for a position upon hire. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
