About the Role
Within SDSS, a new unit called External Education and Mobilization has been created. The mission for this organization is to harness the power of knowledge and education to inform and motivate change to achieve a more sustainable future.  

The unit is seeking someone to define, drive, and lead the mobilization initiatives within this new organization. In this context, the definition of mobilization is the development and distribution of educational resources and solutions to inform and motivate behavior and actions on a global scale that will contribute to a more sustainable future for our planet and its population. 

This role will be responsible for developing the strategy and goals for this initiative, building out the team necessary to achieve these goals, and leading the team to achieve the ambitious goals associated with this area. To fully address this opportunity, the Managing Director will have two principle areas of responsibility.  

First, they will work with the SDSS departments, faculty, institutes, and centers as well as other schools within the University to democratize access to the insights, research, and teaching from all parts of the University. The goal of these activities is to help inform the world on the challenges and opportunities of sustainability as well as promote improved sustainability education globally. Towards this end, they will be responsible for the development of an effective distribution model for this content, sourcing and optimizing the content for distribution, and reaching millions of people with these knowledge offerings.

Second, they will work with external partners to develop and implement an approach to inform and motivate more sustainable behavior at the individual and community level at a societal scale. This initiaitve is unique in that it will focus not just on informing but on stimulating behaviorial change. The approach to this challenge will embrace the philosophy that change at scale requires an eco-system of organizations, innovators, and change agents that are all enabled to create or contribute to a wide array of public-facing solutions. The enablement is a result of the development of digital public infrastructure that is made openly available to reduce the effort necessary to create solutions and also encourage collaboration and sharing among solution providers. Towards this end, they will be responsible for collaborating with external partners to define the digital infrastructure, recruit the eco-system, and build out multiple high value digital application solutions that address key sustainability challenges.

Your Responsibilities will include:

  • By leveraging subject matter expertise, lead the strategic planning and analysis for mobilization actitivies and intiatives including addressing the significant business, marketing, financial, and technical challenges.
  • Build and supervise a team of staff to support the development and implementation of the mobilization programs.
  • Manage and direct the development, implementation, administration, and evaluation of the program. Monitor trends and recommend new programs and/or program directions.
  • Represent the program at the university level and/or to external/internal stakeholders and constituencies.
  • Direct and manage outreach strategy that includes relationship development, communications, and collaborations.
  • Develop and oversee budgets; manage finances including monitoring, analyzing, forecasting, and reporting.

To be successful in this position, you will need: 

Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and seven years of relevant experience in administrative and financial management, or combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory, planning, and change management skills.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills. Ability to influence people, solve problems, troubleshoot, think creatively, and resolve conflicts.
  • Advanced financial expertise in accounting budget planning and financial forecasting.
  • Advanced expertise in grants and contract administration.
  • Advanced analytical and problem solving skills. Strong knowledge of industry standards and/or regulatory requirements.
  • Strong negotiation and effective interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Advanced expertise in business and management computer applications and databases.
  • Subject matter expertise for area(s) of responsibility.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage deadlines.

In addition, our preferred qualifications include:

  • Education and/or relevant experience in computer science and/or user experience design.
  • Ability to design high-impact digital educational programs, solutions, and applications.
  • Experience with the development of cloud-based resources and infrastructure.
  • Experience in developing and supporting an external partner eco-system.
  • Experience developing and scaling consumer-facing services.
  • Knowledge of and prior experience working in sustainability.

The expected pay range for this position is $189,000 to $241,000 per annum.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
