This position works full-time on-site and is not eligible for a hybrid work schedule.

Stanford Libraries is seeking a full-time Late Night Library Specialist. The Specialist primarily oversees the late night study space in Green Library to ensure that it has an atmosphere conducive for studying and research.The Specialist performs limited book circulation for books on hold or in the course reserves collection, provides users with information about library resources, services and policies, and performs material processing activities at the service desk.
This position is unique in having owl-shift hours (12:00 A.M to - 8:30 A.M. Monday- Fridays/overnight Sundays-Thursdays) and because of the overall limited staffing of the space during that time (3 people total), great attendance is required of the Specialist and scheduled time off will need to be planned well in advance and may be limited to non-peak weeks.

About the Position
The Library Specialist primarily oversees activities in the late night study space in Green Library to ensure it remains a productive environment for Stanford students.
The Specialist will begin their shift working alongside the evening team that is ending their shift, by helping secure the parts of the library that are closing, and ensuring only Stanford patrons remain in the late night study space. Then, the Specialist will monitor space use, assist users with basic inquiries and equipment troubleshooting, perform limited check-out of course reserves items, process returned books and provide information about library resources, services and policies.The Specialist will use any of several applications to validate user privileges or assist users with their library account.
Additionally, the Specialist will perform a variety of library project work from the service desk, such as: scanning book chapters/articles to make PDFs, bundling and processing magazines to send to the commercial binder, compiling or entering statistics, transcribing handwritten text, and creating finding aids for a collection.
If building alarms or incidents occur, the Specialist will respond according to department procedures. A public safety officer (or contracted security) will generally be available on-site, but staff may be relied upon to engage emergency services, help with alarm resolution, or contact 24-hr facilities support or library administrators.
This role leans on strong communication skills for attentive and welcoming customer service and supervision of the study space. A proactive work habit, strong use of office applications, and a positive stance toward teamwork will make this a productive contributor.
Work Schedule:
Location: Cecil H. Green Library, Department of Access Services, Stanford Libraries. This position works full-time on Stanford’s historic campus.
40 - hourr week schedule:
●During the 3 quarters of the main academic year: Overnight Sunday to Thursday nights which is 12:00am-8:30am Monday-Fridays (with a +15% shift premium).
●During summers: 2pm-11pm (with a +10% shift pay premium) or 12:45p-9:45p (no shift differential) Sunday through Thursdays, depending on business needs. Summer schedule will be determined in the Spring Quarter.
Core Duties*:
Public Interaction, including job duties such as:
●Provide basic library use assistance.
●Monitor the late night study space in the Hohbach Hall space in Green Library, the only part of the building that will be open to Stanford ID cardholders.
●Assist patrons with book check out or returns and account information. Perform routine circulation functions such aschecking in andchecking out library materials, and managing item requests.
●Occasionally help users with complex inquiries, non-routine transactions, and customer service inquiries and problems or make referrals as appropriate.
●Identify and implement customer service improvements.
●Release keys and combinations to assigned study spaces and lockers (though lockers will not be available to users during the overnight shift).
●Instruct users in the use of library catalog and other informational resources, public computers and library services.
●Perform routine library privileges services according to established policies and procedures.
Supervision, including job duties such as:
●This position may hire, train, supervise, and evaluate temp/casual staff or student hourly staff.
●Identify procedures that need to be refined; use information sharing with staff to keep skills, policies and procedures uniform and identify staff training needs.
●Supervise the operations of a library unit including supervision of lower level staff.
●Monitor staff premium, overtime or leave and report to HR as appropriate.
●Handle incident reports and emergencies.
●Draft reports for supervisor.
●May assist or perform department time leave administrator duties to ensure timecard entries are in sync with policies and report issues to staff supervisors.
Materials Processing, including job duties such as:
●May receive and prepare new acquisitions and items paged from off-campus storage.
●Collect and maintain library statistics.
●Process new books and notify requesting patrons of availability.
●Compile finding aids for archival collections.
●Process microfilm and prepare bundles of magazines for the bindery.
Interlibrary Services, including job duties such as:
●Scan book chapters and journal articles for Stanford patrons and other institutions.
●Process items borrowed from and loaned to other libraries.
●Conduct searches to identify materials held by other libraries for Stanford patrons.
Library Privileges Services, including job duties such as:
●Perform library card issuance tasks, key issuance and perform quality control measures to ensure completeness and accuracy.
●Learn Access Control System (Lenel) to help with any building issues.
●Use regular reports to identify any privileges issues with the circulation record.
●Learn to use, manage, and troubleshoot the group study room reservation software (LibCal).
●Screen, evaluate, and respond to library privileges issues and requests, and resolve them by making appropriate referrals (i.e., Stanford ID Card Office, DLSS, Library administration, SUL Tech supports).
●Download and analyze library entry statistics and create reports as needed (Density.io).
Collection Maintenance, including job duties such as:
●Perform searches for missing items.
●Process and prepare items for the Bindery.
●Clear holds shelves.
●Prepare books for transfer to off-campus storage.
Computing Support, including job duties such as:
●Assist users and perform basic troubleshooting for library technology such as photocopiers, printers, microfiche readers, etc.
●Use on a daily basis common computer programs such as word processing, spreadsheets, Web browsers, and email.
●Use library applications required to complete tasks such as the ILS (FOLIO), ILLiad and other resource sharing software.
●Use the Access control system (Lenel) for card production, and have an understanding of the visitor registration software; administer applications as appropriate.
●Have an understanding of Level 1 computer support.
●Monitor library email accounts and reports.
Building duties, including job duties such as:
●Perform opening and closing activities. Opening and/or closing activities such as managing doors, lights, and computers.
●May perform walk-throughs to monitor or clear the building of all patrons.
●Help guests enter the building by performing quality issuance and monitoring of users entering the building.
●Investigate door alarms, report building or patron incidents to supervisors, Facilities and/or public safety as appropriate.

Minimum Requirements
Education & Experience:
●Two-year college degree plus three or more years of experience in an academic library, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
●Experience with direct interaction with patrons.
●Demonstrated computer literacy with word processing, spreadsheets and communication software such as email.
●Proven track record with handling complex procedures from beginning to end.
●Exhibit strong analytical and problem solving skills.
●Demonstrated ability to perform detailed tasks accurately and efficiently.
●Possess strong communication skills in English.
●Demonstrated customer service skills.
Other relevant knowledge, skills and abilities may include:
●Demonstrated supervisory experience.
●Previous work experience in an academic library.
●Previous experience working flexible and varying shifts.
●Experience opening/closing a facility or responding to emergencies.
●Experience editing existing holding records, which may require minimal to extensive editing.
●Work independently and as a team member; recognize and set priorities and meet deadlines.
●Demonstrated ability to provide exceptional customer service and dealing effectively with a diverse clientele.

●Ability to push a cart weighing up to 650 lbs. that requires an initial push force up to 70 lbs.
●Ability to work in an environment that is dusty and or moldy.
