Anticipated Schedule: Monday-Friday 9am-6pm. The anticipated schedule is based on the operational needs and can change at any time, with notice.

The Clinical Anatomy Lab Assistant supports the Division of Clinical Anatomy by preparing and maintaining cadavers, anatomical specimens, and laboratory facilities used in medical school courses, outreach programs, and research training activities. The role is hands on, operational, and safety critical, requiring careful adherence to established protocols for donor handling, chemical safety, biosafety, and course preparation. The Lab Assistant works under general supervision and collaborates closely with the Anatomical Gift Program (AGP), faculty instructors, program coordinators, and students. The Lab Assistant works under general supervision from the Division Manager, AGP Lead, and faculty leads. Daily priorities may be assigned via verbal instruction, written schedules, or routine check‑ins. Work is periodically reviewed for accuracy, adherence to safety protocols, and readiness for instructional use.

The employee performs routine tasks independently once trained and must escalate unusual donor issues, chemical concerns, or facility hazards.

 

Job Duties include:

  • Lab Cleaning, Maintenance, and Safety - Includes routine cleaning of the anatomy lab spaces, monitoring chemical supplies, and maintaining safe operations in accordance with division standards.
  • Handling Chemicals, Safety Supplies & Biohazard Disposal - Manages chemical stock, organizes safety and operational supplies, communicates with vendors, and supports compliance processes.
  • Course Preparation & Lab Setup - Assists with hands on course setup for medical school anatomy courses, schedules and coordinates lab use, and supports external research groups.
  • Equipment Receiving & Inventory for Specialized Courses - Receives incoming equipment shipments, organizes incoming materials for specialized courses, and ensures equipment is available and functioning.
  • Anatomical Gift Program (AGP) – Donor Preparation & Storage - Supports donor intake, preparation, logistics, storage oversight, and assists with maintaining accurate specimen tracking.
  • Additional Operational Support –General administrative and operational tasks as needed, such as assisting with documentation, maintaining accurate tracking systems, and supporting logistics for complex lab schedules.
     

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum of one year of experience as a Laboratory Assistant I or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with anatomical specimens, embalming processes, and preparing embalming solutions.
  • Knowledge of gross anatomy lab procedures and safe handling of human donors.
  • Understanding of biohazard protocols, chemical safety, PPE, and EH&S compliance.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring precision, manual dexterity, and safe instrument handling.
  • Ability to follow technical instructions, document inventory changes, and communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Professionalism and adherence to donor care standards required in anatomy educational environments.
  • Safe operation of: perfusion apparatus, bone saw, dissection instruments, hoist systems, vacuum pumps, steam sprayers, specimen carts, freezers/refrigerators, and cleaning equipment.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Some familiarity with a laboratory environment helpful but not required. Will be trained to do this work.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • In addition to the qualifications listed for the Laboratory Glassware Washer, these employees must have demonstrated initiative and good judgment.
  • Required to perform work with a minimum of error and less day-to-day supervision. 
  • Basic Arithmetic skills.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Manual dexterity to perform assigned tasks.
  • Write by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts.
  • Frequently stand/walk, perform seated work, operate special machines.
  • Occasionally twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach /work above shoulders, light fine grasping.
  • Lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 75 pounds.
  • Rarely help move heavier items (e.g. chairs or lab equipment; packages of supplies; drums containing 2 to 15 gallons, depending on ability.
  • In some Glassware Washing operations, occasionally may pull a wheeled Glassware cart that weighs approximately 100 pounds.

Additional PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
In some AGP operations, occasionally may pull a gurney that weighs approximately 220 pounds.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work occurs in a research laboratory environment. Depending on research, Lab Assistants may work in the vicinity of animals, chemicals, gasses or hazardous materials. Expected to follow all safety requirements and procedures, including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) if required.

 

Additional and/or Unusual WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May be required to work overtime, evenings and weekends, including Holidays.
  • Potential exists for exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potential biohazard materials.
  • Must be willing to work with donors and cadavers in experimental circumstances.

The expected pay range for this position is $29.54 (Step 1) to $35.71 (Step 10) per hour.  Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
