Infrastructure Engineering Software Engineer

Join Stanford University IT’s Enterprise Technology Infrastructure Engineering DevOps team. We are a spirited and innovative Infrastructure Engineering and DevOps group, leveraging cloud-centric technologies to integrate services efficiently and effectively. Our team emphasizes automation, scalability, and operational excellence through AI-driven and iterative engineering. We are seeking a passionate software engineer eager to bridge the development and operations gap with a software engineering-driven mindset and a DevOps approach.

As a Software Engineer with Operations Responsibilities, you will design, develop, and maintain our IT infrastructure and software solutions with a focus on service integrations, employing a software engineering-driven DevOps methodology. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop APIs, infrastructure engineering and integration tools, and websites. Additionally, you will optimize CI/CD pipelines, manage containerized applications and services, and handle operational duties, including participating in the on-call rotation to support and maintain our services. Integrating services such as Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 in a cloud-centric environment with a software engineering focus is a key aspect of this role. We prioritize reliability, scalability, security, and performance in all our projects and services.

 

Responsibilities

  • Software Development, Scripting and Automation:
    • Design, build, and maintain Python-based APIs using FastAPI within our infrastructure, primarily in containerized and Kubernetes-based cloud environments.
    • Develop Python and Bash scripts to streamline processes. Utilize Terraform or Ansible for infrastructure automation.
    • Develop, Enhance and maintain CI/CD pipelines to ensure efficient and reliable deployments.
  • Service Integration & Automation:
    • Integrate cloud services (Google Workspace, Microsoft 365) and automate workflows to enhance operational efficiency. Develop tools and websites to improve user experience and streamline business processes.
  • Collaboration:
    • Work closely with other Stanford teams to integrate infrastructure with application services throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Cloud Infrastructure and Service Management:
    • Manage and scale cloud services, design Kubernetes clusters, and ensure effective container orchestration.
  • Infrastructure and Service Operations:
    • Participate in the team’s on-call rotation to provide timely support and maintenance for our services.
    • Monitor system performance, respond to incidents promptly, and implement solutions to prevent future issues.
  • Infrastructure Planning & Security
    • Assist in upgrades, migrations, and capacity planning to support growing infrastructure needs.
    • Implement and uphold security best practices to ensure compliance with policies and regulations.

 

Job Qualifications:

  • Software Engineering Mindset, Experience and Strong Python Skills:
    • We are looking for someone who has a primarily software engineering background and mindset, with an interest in service automation, integration and operations.
    • Minimum of 3 years of experience in Python development, with expertise in building APIs, automations, and service integrations.
  • Service & Infrastructure Operations Experience:
    • At least 1 year of experience in IT service operations, infrastructure maintenance, and automation, including infrastructure as code.
    • Experience in roles such as Software Engineer, DevOps Engineer, or equivalent.
  • A Growth Mindset:
    • Positive attitude with a growth mindset.
    • Ability to work independently and communicate clearly.
    • Self-initiated with a proactive approach to proposing and implementing improvements.
    • Capable of managing projects and tasks to deliver effective results.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Other Programming Languages & Skills: Proficiency in Bash, Zsh, JavaScript/Node.js, or other modern programming languages such as Java, Kotlin, etc.
  • Microservices: Experience with microservices architecture and containerization.
  • Containers & Kubernetes: Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, Docker, and container orchestration.
  • Cloud Platforms: Experience with major cloud environments such as GCP, AWS, or Azure.
  • Infrastructure as Code: Familiarity with Terraform, CloudFormation, or Ansible.
  • Cloud Databases: Knowledge of PostgreSQL, MySQL, etc.
  • Monitoring Tools: Experience with Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, or Splunk.
  • Certifications: Cloud or DevOps certifications (AWS, GCP, Azure).
  • CI/CD Tools: Familiarity with GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, etc.
  • Networking & Security: Understanding of networking and security protocols.

 

The expected pay range for this position is $160,221-170,000 per annum.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
