The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA) is the hub for all postdoctoral appointments at Stanford. We support postdoctoral scholars through professional development, administrative functions, and all aspects of their training as they develop their independent careers. OPA collaborates with university organizations, faculty, postdocs, administrators, and external entities to support the personal growth and professional development of each postdoc in preparation for their independent research, professional, and academic careers.

Job Purpose
The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA) at Stanford University is seeking a Benefits Services Specialist to join the Postdoc Benefits team. The Postdoc Benefits Team administers, a comprehensive health plan and medical leave benefits for 2,600 postdocs and their families. This dedicated team seeks a creative, mission-driven professional to engage with the postdoc population and help communicate the vast array of benefits available to them; assess eligibility; track incoming postdocs; help to design and deliver training; and continue the excellent service that the team has developed. This position will help triage health benefits questions and disability cases, provide bi-weekly benefit orientations, advise postdocs, departmental administrators, and faculty, perform occasional financial support, and work towards process improvement for the array of work associated with the self-funded health benefits and the leave plans.
The successful candidate will be independent, committed to excellence, and interested in working with a population that comes from all over the world to pursue their training at Stanford. Attention to detail, self-motivation, and a passion for problem-solving on every level are key qualities.
This position may work from both of Stanford’s campus and will be considered for an option of telecommuting from the Bay Area (hybrid of working 2-3 days on-site), subject to operational need.
Core Duties
Provide customer service responses by applying information, tools, processes and subject matter expertise to benefits related inquiries/service requests via phone, computer-based chat, email or in-person.
Monitor incoming work queues; select highest priority work; maintain volume of output to department standards.
Monitor, report on and complete all phases of case management support at an expert level with minimal supervision; ensuring issues are coordinated, logged, tracked, and resolved appropriately.
Act as technical expert in a customer support environment. Escalate issues and refer to specialized benefits expert as needed.
Represent the Postdoc Benefits Team on benefit programs, policies, or initiatives at workshops, presentations, new postdoc orientations, or in one-on-one meetings with postdocs faculty, department admins and other HR clients.
Participate in projects requiring technical expertise and creativity in analysis.
Act as a resource and train peer specialists on how to perform core duties
Provide input on process improvements, postdoc-facing communications and web pages
Education & Experience (Required):
Bachelor’s degree or four years experience or a combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Required):
Ability to provide excellent client service.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to communicate complex benefits issues in layman’s terms.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Proven ability to learn and apply general human resources policies using problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and effectively handle highly sensitive and personal information with sound judgment, tact, and discretion.
Ability to multitask and to effectively organize workload.
Strong, effective interpersonal, and customer service skills.
Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). Experience using email and internet.
Proficient in using human resource management systems, such as PeopleSoft and time/leave systems.

Rarely kneel/crawl, operate foot and/or hand controls.

The expected pay range for this position is $40.60 to $46.00 per hour.
