Founded in 1965, the Stanford Computer Science (CS) Department continues to lead the world in computer science research and education influencing society at levels that remain without parallel among academic institutions. Its spin-offs are among the most successful corporate ventures in the world, and many of the leaders in the academic and corporate research world are graduates of the Stanford CS Department.

 

The CS department is seeking a Graduate Admissions Officer to provide support unique to the CS Admissions Group.  In collaboration with faculty admissions chairs, this position will oversee and manage both the PhD and MS admissions processes. This position involves evaluating applicant qualities using a holistic approach beyond academics while maintaining fairness and transparency in decision making. A successful candidate should possess strong analytical skills, excellent communication abilities, keen attention to detail, and a deep understanding of the institution's values. They should be a good team player, pro-active, and willing to adapt to changes based on needs.

 

In this role, you will:

  • Oversee the CS graduate admissions for PhD and MS process. Develop program guidelines and policies. 
  • Oversee and manage the day-to-day work of CS graduate admissions.   Read and review 5000+ graduate applications and work with the admissions committee to evaluate applications.
  • Recommend general policies and guidelines for evaluating applicants.  Manage admissions committee meetings for PhD and MS applications process.
  • Read, evaluate, recommend and advocate to the Admissions Committee on which graduate applicants to consider for admission based on current university and department priorities.
  • Train and guide admissions committee members including faculty, student readers and staff on multiple systems for reviewing and evaluating applications. 
  • Collaborate with University Registrar’s office, Bechtel International Center, SoE Dean’s office, CS Diversity Committee to interpret university policies and determine implementation process in the CS department. 
  • Mediate complex and sensitive issues regarding applicants’ information such as meeting University diversity priorities.
  • Analyze effectiveness of the admissions process by providing and discussing statistical data in order to make recommendations for improvements. 
  • Prepare reports and statistics pertaining to graduate admissions every year.  Present reports to the PhD Admissions chair and CS faculty.
  • Test and evaluate the admissions systems and suggest updates/enhancements to the university registrar to accommodate the needs of the CS department. 
  • Manage communications to prospective applicants throughout the year. Apprise students of research, fellowship and scholarship opportunities, make recommendations and may award grants.
  • Manage CS website for updates on admissions deadlines, criteria, requirements and processes.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert to students and other departments; represent unit/department.
  • Reconcile complex issues; analyze diverse transactions from multiple sources.
  • Manage and supervise one student services specialist.

Education & Experience (Required):

  • Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (Required):

  • Strong communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and management.
  • Advanced analysis and problem solving skills.
  • Advanced computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Advanced customer service skills.
  • Relevant computer systems/technology experience.
  • Understanding of financial transactions.
  • Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Occasionally stand, walk, twist, use fine manipulation, grasp, use a telephone, write by hand, sort and file paperwork, lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

Pay Range:

The expected pay range for this position is $91,874 to $108,373 per annum.

Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
