MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
High School diploma, G.E.D, or equivalent required and two (2) years’ experience or a combination of equivalent education and work experience.
To be successful in this position, you need:
- Familiarity with California Title 19 and Code of Federal Regulations (CFR Title 49, Transportation of Hazardous Materials).
- Working knowledge of the methods and materials used in fire extinguisher installation, maintenance and repair.
- Demonstrated ability and experience in the safe and proper use of a chemical retrieval and refill machine and other small tools used on a daily basis.
- Demonstrated ability and experience in the safe and proper use of a hydrostatic test machine and drying system.
- Thorough working knowledge of general work safety procedures and other applicable regulations.
- Knowledge and training on state and federal regulations pertaining to hazardous chemical waste management, transportation, and disposal.
- Ability to read building blueprints and understand general requirements for building occupancy per the California Fire Code and install fire extinguishers accordingly.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to use PC-based computers for data entry to enter logs of equipment serviced, e-mail, and other applications.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a California Non-commercial Class C Driver’s License and drive day and night.
- Ability to climb ladders to access extinguishers located on top of cooling towers, in attic spaces and down in basements, tunnels and elevator pits, including confined spaces.
- Ability to climb stairs to access extinguishers on upper and lower floors of buildings not equipped with elevators or to access extinguishers located in mechanical and electrical rooms, roof-top penthouses or basements.
- Ability to walk and carry portable fire extinguishers for an extended period of time. Be able to use hands to disassemble and reassemble fire extinguishers.
- Ability to carry extinguishers that may weigh up to 30 pounds. Be able to climb up and down ladders with a harness to service equipment in underground tunnels.
- Ability to see and read gauges, tags, and stamped dates on fire extinguisher containers. Be able to communicate with other techs using a hand-held radio and cell phone.
Certifications and Licenses:
Must possess and maintain a valid California Class C Non-commercial Driver’s License. Valid California Fire Extinguisher Certificate of Registration required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
- Constantly stand/walk, grasp lightly/forcefully, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 20 pounds
- Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, operate hand controls
- Occasionally sit, perform desk-based computer tasks, write by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), work/reach above shoulders, and lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 21-40 pounds.
- Rarely use telephone, sweep/scrub/mop, operate a manual pipette, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh more than 40 pounds.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. safely and carry it a short distance.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
- May be required to work overtime, evenings and weekends, including holidays, sometimes in inclement weather conditions.
- May be required to travel out of town for training.
- May be exposed to high voltage electricity, radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers, noise > 80dB TWA, heavy metals, temperature extremes.
- May work in confined spaces or at heights greater than 10 feet.

The expected pay range for this position is $39.53 (Step 1) to $47.96 (Step 10) per hour. Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
