Student Affairs seeks an experienced and talented Director, Well Being & Strategy to join our team. The Director will provide strategy, vision and direction regarding issues and objectives related to student mental health and well-being and community flourishing; lead complex, high-visibility process innovation projects through a public health approach in the area of mental health and well-being with a focus on undergraduate and graduate student populations; liaise with Student Affairs and Vaden senior management, VPSA functional units, academic schools, and other partners to implement vision and strategy; lead the development of new pilot initiatives and manage the work of other employees until permanent organizational decisions are made to support ongoing operation of successful initiatives. The Director reports to the associate vice provost (AVP) for health and well-being in the Division of Student Affairs and serves as a member of the AVP’s senior leadership team.

In this role, you will:
Oversee the Well-Being (Coaching) unit consisting of seven full-time licensed coaches. These coaches, with intentional efforts to eliminate social determinants of health and other health equity challenges in their work:

    • Provide 1:1 coaching sessions with students focusing on behaviors and issues impacting their well-being including, but not limited to, flourishing, values clarification, personal and professional goal-setting, personal relationships, time management, relationships with food, body and sleep, and values-based decision making.
    • Serve as upstream public health educators to all members of the campus community (students, faculty and staff) by offering group coaching in the form of requested trainings and workshops about flourishing, supporting students in distress, resource referral protocol, and other topics related to student well-being
    • Effectively market the coaching resource and reach new students with robust community coaching efforts such as campus tabling events, drop-in hours in community centers and other population-specific locations, undergraduate neighborhood events, and campus grief gatherings.
  • In addition to overseeing and supporting the program operations described above, the Director will offer direct advocacy for the coaching team as outlined in the Vaden and campus-wide responsibilities listed below.
    • Campus Health and Wellness Strategy – assure the inclusion of upstream, preventative health promotion efforts, like Well-Being Coaching, are included in campus strategy plans.
    • Assessment and Evidence-based Approach – support the Well-Being Coaching team’s efforts to collect, analyze and utilize effective data in program evaluation; lead the team’s evolving understanding of elevated assessment work; hold responsibility for including data collection efforts designed with appropriate equity practices included.
    • Communications, Marketing and Outreach – work with coaches and Well-Being leadership to create promotion strategies that ideally reach all students, with particular focus on outreach to under-represented and historically marginalized student populations; positively drive (increase as needed) student use of the coaching service through effective communication and marketing strategies.
    • Donor Cultivation and Stewardship – create dynamic Well-Being Coaching reports, data, and other materials for existing donors to support stewardship efforts from the Office of Development and VPSA Central; support development of members of the coaching team to interact with donors and potential donors as appropriate and requested; promote Well-Being Coaching as a viable gift-funding option by maintaining relationships with OOD colleagues and leading the ongoing development and growth of a student resource that is attractive to donors; meet with donors and potential donors as requested.
    • Community Collaboration - promote the services of Well-Being Coaching to the broader Stanford community ensure its active role and participation in well-being initiatives across campus.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree and ten years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience. Experience in higher education setting strongly preferred.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Advanced degree in public health, health promotion, health policy, psychology, health education, social work or related field with 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of full-time supervisory experience of professional staff and a demonstrated record of leading professional development for staff.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • User knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong analytical skills to review and analyze complex financial information.
  • Demonstrated experience managing people.
  • Understanding of underlying technological needs and requirements.
  • Leadership and expertise in the use of evidence-based health promotion programs/initiatives to analyze health promotion needs of emerging adults, especially college students; experience conducting literature reviews, needs assessments, program evaluations, and creating plans to strategically guide programmatic and budget decisions.
  • Knowledge and application of health promotion, behavior change, population-based theories and models, and experience using environmental management strategies/ecological model
  • Ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external constituencies, demonstrate commitment to diversity, social justice, and cultural competence.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment and the ability to foster cultural, racial, gender equality on a personnel and programmatic level.
  • Excellent writing, interpersonal communication and organizational skills
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends and to adjust work assignments according to programmatic and divisional needs.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities, and meet deadlines required.


Working Conditions:

  • Hybrid Eligible (Up to 2 days per week)
  • Able to work on evenings and weekends, as needed

The expected pay range for this position is $191,546 - $207,754 per annum.
