The Stanford Graduate School of Education (GSE) seeks a full-time Director of Finance & Operations to develop and implement EdEthics financial and operational strategy in a sustainable, mission-driven team context.

This position is a 1-year fixed term appointment based on Stanford University’s main campus. Consideration will
be given to a hybrid work schedule (partially onsite and offsite work), subject to operational need.

ABOUT US

The Stanford University Graduate School of Education (GSE) is a top-ranked school of education, known for its prestigious faculty, rigorous graduate degree programs, and its impact on the quality of education across the world. The GSE is committed to developing leaders in education research, practice, and policy. EdEthics is led by Meira Levinson, Professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Education. EdEthics supports educators and policymakers to ask important questions about the ethical dimensions of their work, develops new language to talk about educational ethics, and provides frameworks for developing a philosophically rigorous, pragmatically useful theory of educational justice. EdEthics works with K-12 practitioners and school districts, higher education, policymakers, and scholars in a range of initiatives and networks. EdEthics also develops and publishes normative case studies, academic research, digital resources, and other resources in various mediums. Current projects include online and in-person offerings to help teachers and educational leaders address ethical dilemmas and values in education, research on intellectual humility, and supporting the teaching of the legacies of slavery and navigating controversial conversations in the classroom. POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Finance & Operations leads the financial and operational components across projects at the initiative. The Director of Finance & Operations will be responsible for working with the Faculty Director and Executive Director as well as other members of the leadership team to ensure that accounting, programmatic strategies, and operational procedures are effectively implemented.

CORE DUTIES:

Strategic Leadership

  • Directly report to Faculty Director and Executive Director 
  • Collaborate with leadership team to develop budgets; lead finalization of budgets 
  • Collaborate with leadership team on grant proposals, reports, one-pagers and other development resources, and philanthropic development strategy and outreach 
  • Help plan, coordinate, and participate in leadership team meetings
  • Manage hiring and coordinate with key staff across GSE and the University

Financial Management

  • Supervise EdEthics Administrative staff
  • Manage finances and budgets across projects 
  • Lead business, regulatory and technical elements of programs 

Operational Management

  • Ensure alignment and compliance with University regulations 
  • Generate annual and periodic reports for different projects
  • Coordinate with relevant Stanford staff across various departments, including HR, OSR, and Development
  • Conduct outreach and coordination with other centers and initiatives at Stanford University with which we might partner and collaborate 

 

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and eight years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated leadership, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent planning, organizational and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound business decisions using good business judgment and innovative and creative problem-solving.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage financial, organizational and staff resources.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent priorities and adjust work flow accordingly.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills with the ability to cultivate professional and business partnerships.
  • Relevant subject matter expertise.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masters or PhD in relevant area (social science, education, economics)
  • Minimum 3 years experience supervising a team of at least five people
  • Experience in collaborative research efforts that includes multiple stakeholders 
  • Supervisory experience 
  • Interest in education research
  • A commitment to equity, justice, and ethics
  • Ability to develop and sustain long-term relationships and steward diverse interests; demonstrated ability to work and communicate with a wide range of constituencies, including faculty, staff, community leaders and decision makers
  • Experience designing and executing an inclusive vision

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Occasionally use a telephone.
  • Rarely lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-20 pounds.

The expected pay range for this position is $162,809 to $175,000 per annum.

Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
