We are seeking to hire a Director of Finance and Operations (DFO) for the educational programs of Change Leadership for Sustainability (SUST) and Earth Systems. The DFO will provide administrative management for both programs. SUST is an interdisciplinary co-terminal master’s program that prepares leaders to radically accelerate the transition to a more sustainable society. Earth Systems is an interdisciplinary environmental science undergraduate major and coterminal master’s program. The DFO provides management and coordination of administrative and operational functions for the programs, supports collaboration with other offices within the school and the university, and represents the programs’ administrative interests as appropriate. This position reports jointly to the Faculty Director/Senior Associate Dean for Education and the Senior Associate Dean for Finance and Administration. Your Responsibilities will include:  

General Administration

Responsible for the accuracy and integrity of the programs’ administrative processes and practices and their consistency with University and School policies and guidelines. 

Financial Management

Direct all fiscal operations for the programs, including:

  • Develop budget plans and resource allocation in response to programmatic needs and goals.
  • Oversee day-to-day financial management of individual accounts and transactions, ensuring that all relevant regulations and policies are adhered to, appropriate cost controls are in place, and necessary records are maintained.

Personnel Administration

Responsible for all personnel activities within the programs, including: 

  • Manage administrative and student services staff.
  • Work closely with School Human Resources and central offices in administering various personnel functions, including staffing plans, postings, classifications, hiring, and performance management. 
  • Oversee all personnel transactions for academic staff, administrative staff, students, and others.

Student Services

Supervise the Student Services Officers’ programs and provide day-to-day oversight, ensuring that effective support is provided to the programs’ students and academic programs. This includes oversight of admissions, allocation of financial aid, teaching assistantship funding, and coordination of teaching programs (courses and degrees, time schedule, etc.), and services to students. 

Facilities and Property 

  • Ensure appropriate maintenance of all programs’ facilities and equipment.
  • Serve as the programs’ representative on all facilities and renovation projects.
  • Maintain/manage current space and equipment inventories for the programs.

To be successful in this position, you will need

  • Bachelor’s degree and five years of relevant experience in administrative and financial management, or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills, including conflict resolution.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills. 
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong financial expertise in accounting, budget planning and financial forecasting.
  • Strong expertise in grants and contract administration.
  • Strong negotiation and interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. 
  • Strong skills with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Strong knowledge of industry standards and/or regulatory requirements.
  • Subject matter expertise for area(s) of responsibility.
  • Ability to multitask and manage deadlines.

The expected pay range for this position is $160,294 to $199,273 per annum.

Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
