To qualify at Software Developer 1 level:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Other Relevant Experience May Include:

  • Experience with digital library, digital humanities projects, data analysis, or data transformation
  • Experience with visualization, search/browse, geographic information systems, or other discovery interfaces
  • Experience with image processing or streaming media

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Current knowledge of latest software and design standards.
  • Ability to define and solve logical problems for technical applications.
  • Knowledge of and ability to select, adapt, and effectively use a variety of programming methods.
  • Ability to recognize and recommend needed changes in user and/or operations procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of software engineering principles.
  • Strong knowledge of at least one programming language, such as Ruby or JavaScript.

To qualify at Software Developer 2 level:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Relevant experience may include:
    • Experience with digital library, digital humanities projects, data analysis, or data transformation
    • Experience with visualization, search/browse, geographic information systems, or other discovery interfaces
    • Experience with image processing or streaming media

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Expertise in designing, developing, testing, and deploying applications.
  • Demonstrated experience in digital library applications or related application domains strongly desired.
  • Proficiency with application design and data modeling.
  • Ability to define and solve logical problems for highly technical applications.
  • Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical clients.
  • Ability to facilitate activities on structured team development projects.
  • Ability to select, adapt, and effectively use a variety of programming methods.
  • Strong knowledge of more than one programming language, including Ruby or JavaScript.
  • Understanding of IT security and expertise in proactively applying considerations to all aspects of position. 

Physical Requirements:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently sit, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, writing by hand.
  • Rarely use a telephone, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

Working Conditions:

  • May work extended hours, evening and weekends for both project-based work and/or regular, on call operational support.
