The Data, Analytics, and Research Computing (DARC) team at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business is looking for a passionate data engineer to join our team. This data engineer will support the development and maintenance of data pipelines for transferring, manipulating, and ingesting multiple terabyte-scale datasets. In addition, the Data Engineer serves as a liaison between academic researchers and data providers, effectively communicating with database administrators, security professionals, research scientists, graduate students, and software engineers.  This engineer should have extensive experience and the ability to quickly learn about diverse data types in a wide variety of formats, including but not limited to:

  • Nested formats (XML, JSON)
  • Unstructured text with different encodings (UTF-8 and others)
  • Fixed-width formats
  • Delimited formats
  • Columnar structures including Parquet, Arvo, and others
  • Database dumps in SQL dialects
  • Compressed data formats
  • Statistical software formats (sasb7dat, data)


A successful candidate will be tasked with maintaining and supporting a growing big data stack that includes technology such as:


  • Python
  • Bash
  • R (nice to have)



  • Ubuntu (Linux command line)
  • Cloud Computing (AWS EC2, GCE, Lambda)
  • Cloud Storage (S3, EBS, Glacier, GCS, Wasabi)
  • Jupyter Notebooks / Google Colab

  • Athena/Hive, BigQuery (serverless)

Your primary responsibilities include:

  • Provide technical design, coding, testing, implementation, maintenance, system and technical support for data initiatives.
  • Conduct and participate in code walkthroughs and document technical design. Assist in Quality Control testing. Troubleshoot and solve technical problems
  • Collaborate closely with Project Manager/Technical Manager on overall Data architecture, roadmap and implementation.
  • Meticulously build Data applications following software methodologies defined.
  • Monitor ETL processes, system audits, and performance and pro-actively fix issues as found. Support the performance of systems.
  • Serve as technical interface with software vendors and data providers, ensuring that researchers have effective access to data in selected systems.
  • Support Source upgrades, Hardware/Software upgrade projects with impact analysis, fixes and end-to-end testing. Provide operational support on failures and outages.


To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree and five years of relevant experience in computer science, or engineering or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Basic understanding of software engineering principles and skills working on Unix/Linux/Windows Operating systems, Version Control and Office software.
  • Strong programming skills, relational database skills with expertise in SQL. Skills in Shell Programming, experience working with security/privacy constraints and fluency in cloud technologies.
  • Understanding in Data warehousing concepts and methodologies and research data workflows.
  • Ability to support custom-built ETL, auditing, and scheduling programs.
  • Ability to define and solve logical problems with the right solutions.
  • Analytical capabilities to slice and dice data and display data in reports for the best user experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to review academic research processes and translate them into BI reporting and analysis solutions.
  • Ability to follow best practices and standards.
  • Ability to identify data application performance bottlenecks and tune.
  • Ability to programmatically process data in flat files, transform and load into Data warehouse.
  • Quick learner of any new technologies OR business processes.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, interfacing between technical partners, data managers and researchers.
