The Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment works to advance global sustainability through new knowledge and practical, fair solutions to pressing environmental challenges. As part of the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, the Woods Institute provides an interdisciplinary research hub for scholars from all seven schools at Stanford. Offering targeted research incentives as well as convening, education, and leadership programs, the Woods Institute supports faculty, researchers, and students as they investigate and advance solutions to critical climate, environment, and sustainability challenges. Working on campus and around the globe, the Woods Institute and its hosted centers and programs combine cutting edge scholarship, diverse partnerships, and deep engagement across sectors and disciplines to advance just, practical solutions for people and the planet.

The Communications Associate is a key member of the Woods Institute’s communications team and works closely with the institute’s events team. The two teams support core Woods Institute strategies for fostering collaboration, building a robust research community, and connecting research to action through convenings that span disciplines and sectors. Working with central University Communications as well as school and institute partners, the Woods Communications and Events teams promote Stanford environmental findings broadly through content production and distribution; website development and maintenance; event planning and promotion; social media outreach; media relations and other activities.

Reporting to the Woods Institute Director of Communications, the Communications Associate is responsible for supporting communications activities that advance the Stanford Woods Institute’s goals for linking solutions-oriented environmental research to action. The Communications Associate is primarily responsible for tracking, curating, and reporting Stanford’s environmental research publications and news media engagement; marketing Woods events and ensuring Stanford environmental research, experts, and events are promoted on our digital channels (web and social). 

Your Responsibilities will include: 

  • Assist in the implementation of and support program communication efforts, including timely creation and editing of marketing campaigns, websites, blogs, emails, and newsletters.
  • Assist others in identifying and developing campus news stories.
  • Review upcoming events, seminars, research reports, grant summaries, campus documents, specialized journals, and newsletters for possible leads to news and feature stories.
  • Assist in the production of content (via CMS) for the applicable university or unit websites; promote news stories to targeted regional, national, and international media.
  • Coordinate media relations and ensure logistics and preparations are handled for media staff.
  • Monitor and manage Woods social media accounts. Maintain social media tools and content calendar for Woods Institute social channels.
  • Produce, schedule, and post social media assets (graphical and written).
  • Track relevant social media trends on campus and in the field.
  • Support event marketing efforts, including timely creation and posting/dissemination of invitations, event announcements, and advertisements.
  • Work with events and IT staff to manage contact lists and distribute blast newsletter/email communications using tools like Mailchimp, Salesforce, FormAssembly, and/or Marketo Application Process.
  • Work with graphic design and other vendors as needed to produce specialty event collateral.
  • Support constituency building efforts by working with events and IT staff as well as student assistants to convey event registration and subscriber data to our CRM/Salesforce database.
  • Track and curate instances of Stanford experts quoted in news outlets about environment and sustainability issues.
  • Track and curate environment and sustainability research publications produced by Stanford faculty.
  • Recruit, train, and manage student assistants to assist with media/publications tracking and curation.
  • Report out media hits and publications internally via a shared Google Sheet matrix, slide deck presentations and Slack, and externally by posting to our web and social media channels, and in relevant sections of our publications.
  • Collect and report on social media, web, and newsletter metrics reflecting impact of communications activities.
  • Produce graphics, presentations, and reports.

To be successful in this position, you will need:

Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree and one year of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated planning and/or project management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to be self-directed and take initiative.

Certifications and Licenses:
None

In addition, our preferred qualifications include:

  • Experience with G-Suite, Outlook, Mailchimp, Asana, and web content management systems (CMS) such as Drupal.
  • Experience with Canva or similar graphic design products used to create basic social media cards/slideshows.
  • Experience with Sprout Social, Khorus, or other social media management platforms.
  • Experience with CRM products like Salesforce is desirable. 

The expected pay range for this position is $35.95 to $42.78 per hour.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
