Hoover's Development team is responsible for cultivating relationships with donors and raising funds to support the Institution's mission. The team manages a complex portfolio of fundraising activities, donor stewardship, and financial operations that support Hoover's academic and research initiatives.

JOB PURPOSE:

The Business Intelligence Manager serves as a critical bridge between Hoover’s Development Office and business partners across the university's functional areas. This role reports to the Senior Manager of Development and oversees all data analytics, data strategies, compliance functions, and gift income projection fund mapping that support the Development team's fundraising operations.

This position combines strategic gift revenue management, advanced data analytics, and supervisory responsibilities. The successful candidate will manage the Development Data Team, ensure accurate gift reconciliation with Finance systems, produce actionable business intelligence, and maintain data security and compliance standards.


CORE DUTIES*:

Data Analytics and Business Intelligence 

  • Reporting & Insights: Oversee production of daily, weekly, and monthly gift reports while analyzing giving trends, donor behavior, pipeline health, and campaign performance to provide actionable insights for strategic decision-making.
  • Visualization & Dashboards: Design and build executive dashboards using Oracle BI, Raiser's Edge, and other analytical platforms, and develop KPIs to measure fundraising effectiveness and team productivity
  • Strategic Analysis: Produce internal financial analysis reports for the Chief Development Officer, perform prospect research and wealth screening analysis, and lead automation or process redesign efforts to improve data accuracy and workflow efficiency.
  • Data Security & Governance: Partner with Hoover's Information Technology team on data security, compliance, and system integration initiatives, ensuring Development operations comply with applicable data privacy regulations and 

    Stanford policies while developing and maintaining data governance policies in alignment with institutional standards.

Financial Management and Reconciliation 

  • Budget Management: Build and manage Development's annual expense budget and gift income projections, providing biannual updates and mapping gifts to fund codes while preparing project budgets for grant requests and stewardship reports.
  • Financial Reconciliation: Lead monthly reconciliation of gift receipts, cash fund transfers, and pledges between Oracle BI and Raiser's Edge systems, investigating and resolving discrepancies in gift records, pledge balances, and fund allocations to ensure accurate gift reporting.
  • Strategic Partnership: Partner with Finance to identify funding gaps and fundraising opportunities that align with institutional priorities, coordinating budget processes, revenue forecasting, and board reporting to ensure consistent metrics and alignment across both teams.


Leadership and Management 

  • University Partnerships: Serve as primary liaison between Hoover Development and business operations partners across the university's functional areas, facilitating communication and mutual understanding while interfacing with Stanford's Central Office of Development on gift processing and reporting matters.
  • Team Development: Supervise and mentor the Development Data Team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development while managing workload distribution, priorities, and resources to meet departmental goals.
  • Technical Leadership: Serve as departmental expert on finance and data systems, reporting tools, and compliance requirements, leading continuous improvement projects to streamline data reporting and strengthen internal controls while performing individual data analysis assignments to support the Development team's strategic initiatives.
  • Innovation & Improvement management: Manage and lead initiatives by partnering with cross-functional teams in evaluating and implementing new systems, tools, and methodologies. Oversee change management processes to ensure successful adoption, maintain alignment with institutional priorities, and drive measurable improvements in fundraising effectiveness and operational efficiency.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Master's degree and at least 6 years of progressively responsible experience in finance, data analytics, business intelligence, or related fields, or a combination of education and relevant experience. MBA is highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • User knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Advanced knowledge of Oracle or other business financial systems
  • Advanced understanding of financial principles.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to clearly and effectively present information to internal and external audiences, client groups and all levels of management.
  • Strong analytical skills to review and analyze complex financial information.
  • Strong leadership and management skills with previous experience managing people, delegating workload and providing direction/corrections as necessary.
  • Demonstrated competency in project management of a high volume of work, some of which is cyclical.
  • Knowledge of procurement needs, including sole-sourcing, cost analyses, vendor requirements, and small business reporting.
  • Demonstrated success in performing meticulous, high quality and compliant work.
  • Ability to interpret complex research and fiscal policies, assimilate information from a wide range of resources and act like a mentor and resource to others.

Preferred/Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Data and Analytical Expertise

  • Advanced knowledge of fund management, accounting practices, and reconciliation in higher education or nonprofit environments. Professional financial accounting credential (CPA preferred).
  • Strong analytical capabilities to interpret complex financial and donor data, providing actionable recommendations with advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, Power Query, and macros.
     

Technical and Systems Expertise

  • Proficiency in database environments, data management systems, and business intelligence platforms, particularly Oracle BI.
  • Experience with donor management systems (Raiser's Edge, Blackbaud CRM, or similar), familiarity with Stanford's financial systems, and understanding of data governance principles, privacy regulations, and compliance frameworks.

Leadership and Communication

  • Proven leadership in team development, mentoring, and performance management. Excellent communication skills to convey complex financial and data analytical information to diverse audiences.
  • Strong project management abilities to manage competing priorities, serve as a strategic liaison between functional areas, and commitment to Hoover's mission while advancing team members' professional development.

Desired Skills

  • Experience with data visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI), knowledge of CASE reporting standards and higher education fundraising metrics, and background in developing data governance policies within complex organizations.
  • Professional certifications (CDMP, Tableau) or interest in obtaining them.

The expected pay range for this position is $160,000 - $212,846 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of the salary or hourly wage the university reasonably expects to pay for a position upon hire. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs. At Stanford University, base pay represents only one aspect of the comprehensive rewards package.
