About the Position:

 

The Branch Operations Specialist in the Terman Engineering Library performs routine circulation, reserves, and technical processing operations of the library and supervises student workers assisting with these and other branch operations.  This position shares roles and responsibilities with the other Branch Operations Specialists and reports to the Engineering Library Digital Technology Manager.  The Terman Engineering Library is one of the most-heavily used branch libraries on campus and supports the nine departments within the School of Engineering.

 

Work Schedule:

 

40 hours per week - M-F, 8:45am-5:15pm

Eligible for hybrid work schedule (1 WFH day per week, as assigned by supervisor), following completion of training period, and contingent upon consistent, excellent performance and departmental needs.

 

Core Duties:

35% Materials Processing, including job duties such as:

        Receive and prepare new acquisitions and items paged from off-auxiliary libraries.

        Process new books prior to shelving and notify requesting patrons of availability.

        Create, maintain or delete records for Course Reserve collections.

        Receive and process items from auxiliary libraries; prepare return shipments.

 

35% Collection Maintenance, including job duties such as:

        Process print and online Course Reserve materials.

        Screen and evaluate circulated materials for a variety of treatment options (i.e. repair, bindery).

        Perform searches for missing items.

        Stack maintenance, straightening, and shifting collections.

        Inventory projects and reports.

 

15% Public Interaction, including job duties such as:

        Perform routine circulation functions such as charging, discharging, managing holds, and accepting payment of library fines.

        Execute library policy on overdue and replacement fines.

        Perform routine library privileges services according to established policies and procedures.

        Create/update library cards and issue borrowing privileges. Assist patrons with access problems, route problems to supervisor.

        Answer informational and ready reference questions in person and via email with clarity, accuracy and professionalism.

        Instruct users in the use of library catalog and other basic informational resources.

        Communicate with faculty and teaching assistants to obtain and process print and online items for class course reserves.

 

5% Supervision and Administration, including job duties such as:

        Train student and hourly workers in assigned routine service desk operations and routine collection maintenance activities.

        Assist with ordering supplies.

 

5% Building and Facilities, including job duties such as:

        Opening and/or closing activities such as managing doors, lights and computers.

        May perform walk-throughs to monitor or clear the building of all patrons.

        Investigate door alarms, report building or patron incidents to supervisors, Facilities and/or public safety as appropriate.

 

5% Computing Support, including job duties such as:

        Using common computer programs such as word processing, spreadsheets, web browsers, and email clients.

        Monitor library email account and reports.

        Edit library web pages and Google Drive documents as needed; monitor and update links.

        Assist users and perform basic troubleshooting for library technology such as photocopiers, printers, microfiche readers, library websites, etc.

 

Other duties as assigned, in addition to the above listed duties based on departmental need.

Minimum Education and Experience Required:

·         Two-year college degree or above plus one or more years of experience in an academic library, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

        Demonstrated interpersonal and organizational skills.

        Ability to understand and communicate library policy.

        Ability to apply judgment in choosing procedures and evaluating alternatives.

        Ability to learn library operational skills.

        Basic leadership skills.

        Experience with direct interaction with patrons.

        Demonstrated computer literacy with word processing, spreadsheets and communication software such as email and shared workspace software.

        Demonstrated familiarity with computer hardware troubleshooting.

        Proven track record with handling complex procedures from beginning to end.

        Exhibit strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

        Demonstrated ability to perform detailed tasks accurately and efficiently.

        Possess strong communication skills in English.

 

Physical Requirements

        Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.

        Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

        Stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand.

        Rarely use a telephone, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), operate hand controls.

        Must be able to push and maneuver a fully-loaded cart weighing up to 650 pounds that requires an initial push force up to 70 pounds.

Working Conditions

        May work in confined spaces and at heights 4-10 feet; be exposed to dust and mold; work extended hours, evenings and weekends.

The expected pay range for this position is $26.53 - $33.01 per hour.  Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
