Stanford Libraries is seeking a full-time Authority & Entity Management Librarian to join Metadata Services. About Metadata Services:

Metadata Services creates, enhances, remediates, and transforms descriptive and discovery metadata in multiple schemas to provide discovery and access to library resources in SearchWorks (our Blacklight implementation) and the Stanford Digital Repository, through the integrated work of four units: Metadata Creation, Metadata Design, E-resources Control and Data Control. The Metadata Creation Unit (MCU) is charged with original metadata creation/cataloging of books, serials, electronic and audiovisual resources, producing approximately 10,000 records per year, with about 3,400 completed according to BIBCO standards. Metadata librarians also assist in metadata creation and authority work for collections in the Stanford Digital Repository (SDR). Several staff members are also participating in our linked data projects and in our move to our new library services platform, FOLIO.

 

About the Position:

 

Reporting to the Associate Director for Metadata Services, the Authority & Entity Management Librarian will be responsible for developing, implementing & executing strategies for the updating, upgrading & maintenance of authorities in both FOLIO and the Stanford Digital Repository (SDR). As we move forward with linked data implementation, the emphasis of the position with shift toward URI remediation & management for both external and internal entities, including Library of Congress vocabularies, Wikidata, ISNI, BF entities & possibly local FOLIO authorities. The Librarian will represent Stanford in the FOLIO community in the areas of authority and entity management as they develop, as well as with other vendors including Share-VDE, Backstage Library Works and OCLC.

 

Core Duties*:

 

·         develops & implements strategies for the management of authorities/entities for FOLIO, Sinopia & SDR, including:

·         metadata analysis for ongoing updates, enhancements, normalization

·         quality assessment and remediation of metadata to meet standards & local requirements

·         Collaborates with team members to evaluate, select, and apply metadata schemas and techniques, standards, data elements, and thesauri to provide description and access to SUL collections

·         Primary stakeholder for FOLIO authorities & entity management as it develops

·         Acts as liaison for authorities/entities processing vendors (currently Backstage & SVDE) including membership in selected SVDE working groups

·         primary stakeholder for ontologies--BF, SVDE--and management of their entities (through Sinopia templates, SVDE Cluster Knowledge Base)

·         develops workflow integrations for Wikidata, ISNI & acts as coordinator

·         Collaborates with team members to evaluate, select, and apply metadata schemas and techniques, standards, data elements, and thesauri to provide description and access to SUL collections

·         SearchWorks metadata person for handling of entity display & new connections to outside entity sources (Wikidata, etc.)

·         May act as project manager or consultant for the creation and management of descriptive and other metadata for selected projects in Metadata Department and in collaboration with other departments or multi-department teams

·         membership in SVDE working groups as necessary

·         Participates in the development of Stanford’s linked-data environment

·         Participates in relevant professional activities

May also include:

·         Direct participation in the PCC NACO and SACO programs as applicable

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

 

Education and Experience:

 

·         For Librarian 2: Advanced Degree in Library Science or a relevant academic discipline with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries and two or more years of relevant experience in a relevant library setting or a combination of education and relevant experience.

·         For Librarian 3: Advanced Degree in Library Science or a relevant academic discipline with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries and five years of experience in a relevant library setting with evidence of capacity to work at a high level of responsibility or a combination of education and relevant experience

 

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

·         Deep appreciation for and demonstrated understanding of the purpose and structure of library-related authority metadata

·         Experience with working with controlled vocabularies, through participation in an authority program such as NACO and/or through data remediation/update activities; broad experience with different types of vocabularies (e.g., LC vocabularies, Wikidata, ISNI) preferred

·         Knowledge of and basic experience in applying current cataloging procedures and principles as defined in RDA, MARC Bibliographic, Holdings, and Authorities formats.

·         Familiarity with, and ability to increase your skill set in, various tools for metadata querying, analysis, remediation, batch-loading & mapping, such as MarcEdit, OpenRefine, SPARQL, XSLT, and scripting languages; knowledge of RDF, XML, and other machine actionable metadata languages; basic understanding of APIs

·         Familiarity with linked data principles, standards, and applications; understanding of library-oriented ontologies such as BIBFRAME strongly preferred

·         Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills combined with attention to detail for complex and exacting work

·         Effective oral and written communication skills

·         Ability to work independently, as a team member, and across organizational boundaries in a highly demanding environment

·         Flexibility to be organized, productive and effective in a dynamic environment, involved with a variety of simultaneous projects

·         Librarian 2 level requires a minimum of 3 years relevant experience.

·         MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited library school or the equivalent

·         High level of proficiency using PC-based applications (Windows, word processing, spreadsheets) and other computer applications (email, Internet, Integrated Library Systems); high level computer competency kept up to date through continuous learning.

·         Commitment to professional development and service.

 

For Librarian 3:

 

·         Evidence of engagement in relevant professional or academic communities

·         Proven ability to develop, implement and manage short- and long-term projects

·         Ability to work with library-oriented ontologies, including BIBFRAME; knowledge of Sinopia or other linked data editors strongly preferred

 

 

Physical Requirements:

 

·         Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.

·         Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weight up to 10 pounds

·         Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other)

·         Rarely use a telephone, operate hand controls

·         Must be able to push and maneuver a fully-loaded cart weighing up to 650 pounds that requires an initial push force up to 50 pounds

Working Conditions:

The expected pay range for this position is:

 

Level 2:  $83,000 - $106,000

Level 3:  $100,000 - $129,000
