Job Purpose:

The Office of Community Standards (OCS) promotes the University’s commitment to integrity by upholding two of Stanford’s foundational principles: the Fundamental Standard and the Honor Code.  The Associate Dean of Students will direct the student group accountability process and develop proactive strategies and developmental interventions for student groups to understand university policies and group development.  The Associate Dean will also supervise the Student Support & Outreach Coordinators who provide proactive, compassionate and practical support for all students with matters before OCS throughout the lifecycle of the process. This includes providing appropriate support services and referrals, and serving as students’ ally/ombuds. In addition, the Associate Dean will champion creative programming throughout the University that not only educates students about issues of academic and personal integrity, and inspires students to adhere to the Stanford community’s norms, but also educates faculty and staff about the purposes and functions of OCS.  The Associate Dean will also serve in some instances as the Conduct Advisor in pending concerns, and in other cases as the Conduct Investigator.

CORE DUTIES:

  • Direct the student group accountability process; meet with student groups to educate on the student group accountability process; assess students’ understanding of their agency and responsibility; engage in critical analysis of student group behavior and policy violations; and, administer group accountability investigations.
  • Collaborate with campus partners who support student groups, including but not limited to Voluntary Student Organizations (VSO), Fraternity & Sorority Life (FSL) organizations, Club Sports, varsity sports and Row Houses; collaborate with campus and community stakeholders to brainstorm interventions that mitigate risk; and serve as subject matter expert on university student group accountability processes.
  • Supervise the Student Support & Outreach Coordinators to ensure that they provide proactive continuous compassionate and practical support for all students who have been notified that OCS has received a letter of concern suggesting some form of misconduct, by guiding students through the OCS process(es), and helping students navigate campus resources of all sorts, including mental health and well-being resources. 
  • Supervise the Student Support & Outreach Coordinators in their work to design and implement proactive educational strategies to inspire students across campus about the critical value of academic integrity and adherence to university norms.
  • Serve in the role of the Conduct Advisor (CA), acting as a neutral party in all assigned cases. Some specific duties of the CA  include: 
  • Conduct initial meetings with responding students to inform them of their rights and responsibilities. Advise responding students, reporting parties, and potential witnesses about the OCS process. 
  • Conduct restorative meetings with students who have accepted responsibility for having violated the Honor Code or Fundamental Standard.
  • Prepare responding students and reporting parties for Hearing Panels and advise them of potential consequences.
  • Document through Maxient and otherwise all hearing panel and appeals panel decisions, including sending final letters, creating final files, maintaining database information, and preserving all information consistent with OCS policies and protocols.
  • Schedule hearings; oversee bias check procedures; communicate necessary information to all parties and relevant offices; execute other administrative details related to case management.
  • Serve as the role of Conduct Investigator (CI) , act as the principal investigator for all assigned cases involving allegations that a student has violated the Honor Code or Fundamental Standard. Some specific duties of the CI include:
  • Conduct thorough investigations, including meeting with knowledgeable parties and gathering relevant evidence. Determine if there is sufficient evidence to file formal charges.
  • When deemed appropriate, file formal charges and inform responding students of charges, the evidence upon which charges are based, and the names of potential witnesses.
  • Advise students on a range of issues, and as appropriate, connect them to resources on matters including, but not limited to academic progress, academic program policies, career planning, accessibility, and health and well-being resources etc., in order to assist them in making informed decisions.
  • Maintain thorough documentation of case management through Maxient in a timely manner.
  • Serve as a member of the Weekly Incident Debrief (WID) and the weekly Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) meetings, and prioritize appropriate students of concern to discuss with relevant campus partners as assigned.
  • Advocate for best practices and trends in student development, academic integrity, conduct processes, artificial intelligence, group development and restorative practices that inform OCS daily work; create tailored presentations to represent the Office of Community Standards that not only educate about academic and personal integrity and the norms of the Community, but serve to motivate students to adhere to these norms; and, prepare and present faculty presentations regarding the OCS purpose/function, and how faculty can best work with OCS to ensure that the disciplinary process is effective, educational, compassionate and developmentally appropriate.
  • Assist with developing evidence-based training and assessment that address contemporary concerns in a college population and other educational initiatives for faculty, staff and students;
    assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures, student satisfaction surveys and other methods of data collection to promote further outreach, education and campus well-being initiatives.

To be successful in this role, the following is required:

  • Bachelor’s degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience. Experience in a higher education setting is preferred.
  • Master’s degree in education; Student Development; Counseling; Social Work or a related field is strongly preferred.
  • Proven ability to interact with a diverse population of faculty, staff, students, and families.
  • Experience in collaborative work with other professional colleagues.
  • Understanding of student developmental theory.
  • Ability to handle complex, sensitive situations, including students’ crises, with a positive attitude, prompt care, flexible mindset, and professional grace.
  • Outstanding judgment, a deep capacity for compassion and empathy, advanced problem-solving skills, diplomatic savvy, a good sense of humor, and a sharp mind.
  • A commitment to the proposition that, regardless of what they may be alleged to have done, students are entitled to be treated with dignity and a recognition that they are not defined by their worst moments.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including public speaking, to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and management.
  • Advanced analysis and problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite and Google applications.
  • Ability to understand and maintain compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations.
  • Ability to work well independently and as a member of a team
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed practices.
  • Solid knowledge of mental health and well-being issues in the college population.
  • Strong project management skills.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • User knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Advanced communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management.
  • Strong analytical skills to review and analyze complex financial information.
  • Strong leadership and strategic management skills.
  • Demonstrated experience managing people.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This position may require evening and weekend hours, as needed, and may require rotational on-call assignments.
  • This is a hybrid position requiring 4 days of onsite work.


The expected pay range for this position is $129,271 - $140,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of the salary or hourly wage the university reasonably expects to pay for a position upon hire. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs. At Stanford University, base pay represents only one aspect of the comprehensive rewards package.
