Stanford Medicine is comprised of Stanford University School of Medicine, a research-intensive medical school, Stanford Health Care, a hospital that is nationally recognized for quality patient care and leading-edge technology, and Stanford Children’s Health, the only health care system in the San Francisco Bay Area exclusively dedicated to pediatric and obstetric care. Medical Center Development (MCD), in partnership with the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children's Health, supports Stanford Medicine. MCD’s passionate and experienced fundraising professionals and partner teams work closely to create a donor-centric approach to development. We continue to envision creative ways to build upon the generous support of our donor community and align our strategic vision with that of Stanford University, which is in the early stages of a new and exciting institutional fundraising effort. Every member of the MCD team and the broader Office of Development staff plays an important role in inspiring donors and providing an exceptionally positive and fulfilling philanthropic experience. Stanford believes that diversity and excellence go hand-in-hand and so hires individuals with a commitment to working effectively with colleagues and donors from a wide range of backgrounds.

The Strategic Data Services (SDS) team supports the overall mission of MCD by supplying strategic information, timely data, and in-depth analysis to executive leaders and frontline development officers and teams. The team’s work cuts across areas from development research to donor relationship management and to prospect and gift reporting. The Systems & Reporting Team, within the SDS team, maintains and builds a proprietary database that serves MCD’s key business requirements and develops a wide range of business intelligence and analytical insights through a number of standard and as well as ad hoc reports.

The Systems and Reporting Team seeks candidates for an Assistant Director position. Reporting to the director of the team, you will create and co-create numerous products for clients in MCD. These include reports largely related to MCD portfolios, including formats that help to build and maintain principal and major gifts prospect pipelines and regularly evaluate the health of prospect pools. If you have the ability to use logic to calculate values, efficiently construct a data set, or scrutinize a detailed project request, then this job might be for you.

Your Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Produce key reports distributed in a variety of formats (often Excel) and help build and maintain customized dashboards for end users in CARD (Salesforce) as well as Oracle Business Intelligence (OBI). The position will produce key reports both individually and in collaboration with more senior members of the team.
  • Contribute to maintaining organizational data standards. This may include working to make sure fielded data is accurate, defined and formatted appropriately, reportable, and in relevant cases, HIPAA/PHI-standards compliant. Work in partnership with MCD Infrastructure and OOD units on maintaining development data standards and integrity.
  • Deeply understand the nature and scope of Stanford’s donor databases and development protocols across the broader Office of Development environment. Understand how various standard systems and data locations with the development environment come together to produce value-added reporting formats for use among decision makers and frontline staff.
  • Contribute to or implement a set of scheduled as well as non-routine reports within SDS. Interpret, monitor, and analyze information regarding policies, procedures, and operational outcomes yielding actionable information to guide decisions in wide-ranging areas. It provides related consultative services.
  • Identify and select usable data from subtle and complex data patterns. Assess and produce relevant, standard, or custom information (reports, charts, graphs, and tables) from structured data sources by querying data repositories and generating the associated information.
  • Utilize fundamental processes and methods to validate data to ensure high quality products. Distribute reports to management, specific teams, and other internal end-users and provide interpretation of data when needed.
  • Develop and produce dashboards, key performance indicators, and other recognized metrics used to monitor and report organizational performance. Collect and analyze metric data.
  • Collect, manage, and clean datasets to ensure data integrity.
  • Research and reconcile data discrepancies occurring among various information systems and reports.
  • Collaborate with data managers to define and implement data standards and common data elements for data collection.
  • Assist with identifying new sources of data and methods to improve data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • May test prototype software and participate in the approval and release process for new software.

  • Ability to collect data using a variety of methods, such as data mining and hardcopy or electronic documentation study, to improve or expand databases.
  • Strong listening, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple activities in a deadline-oriented environment; highly organized, flexible, and rigorous attention to detail.
