The Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery are seeking applicants for the position of Accountant 1 to join our research finance team. Neurology has been a center of excellence for more than four decades and includes over 140 faculty members with primary academic appointments in the department at our four outstanding teaching hospitals and health care systems. Neurosurgery is comprised of 60 neurosurgeons and research faculty and is consistently ranked among the best centers in the nation for neurosurgery. 

We are actively seeking a highly motivated Accountant 1 to join the clinical trials finance team. Our departments have seen dramatic growth in clinical trial awards in the past few years, so we are seeking a candidate with the ability to multi-task and be extremely detail oriented, self-motivated and a team player. S/he must also have excellent communication skills that allow high level interactions with a diverse academic and medical community.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Good knowledge of contract and grant procedures and ability to apply accounting practices.
  • Good accounting concepts and analysis of accounting transactions.
  • Thorough understanding of key attributes in Oracle or similar Accounting System and its impact on reporting, billing, receivables and recovering costs.
  • Knowledge of Stanford research administration processes particularly post award research administration. 
  • Experienced with OMB Uniform Guidance and Circulars A-21, A-110, A-133, Cost Accounting Standard (CAS), GAAP.
  • Strong working knowledge of Excel.
  • Experienced with Oracle and CRISP Stanford systems. 
  • Ability to independently diagnose and solve problems using sound judgment and decision-making abilities.
  • Skilled to independently analyze accounting transactions and ability to reconcile financial information.
  • Strong customer service skills. Working collaboratively with different process partners.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Duties include*:

  • Collaborate with the Sponsored Receivables Management (SRM) team with a focus on maintaining a steady cash flow for the Department’s clinical trials by helping to manage the invoicing, overdue Accounts Receivable and write-offs, unreconciled payments, and data entry errors in the Clinical Research Invoicing System for Participants (CRISP).
  • Review, process, gather, and compile accounting transactions and documents for completeness, accuracy, and compliance. Contribute to development of analyses to be used for key activities or decision making. 
  • Identify, prioritize, and resolve accounting issues; probe beyond stated situation; identify underlying issues; recognize exceptions; perform preliminary analysis. 
  • Run, maintain, reconcile, review, combine, analyze and validate financial data sets, utilizing financial reports, financial databases, and key financial information often from multiple systems. Assist in the preparation of basic management information reports.
  • Identify and resolve incorrect journal entries, data anomalies, deviations from established procedures, and unusual issues. 
  • Collect data and perform research on details of transactions. Ensure work complies with complex internal policies and external regulations which may require interpretation. 
  • Participate as a member of a project team and contribute to change management strategy through communication and collaboration with others. 
  • Recommend, assist, test, or implement process streamlining, system improvements or work flow changes.
  • Contribute to development and maintenance of desktop procedures and process documentation for area of responsibility. 
  • Serve as a liaison to other departments to resolve accounting-related issues. 
  • May train, coach, and review the work of other staff, as needed. Contribute primarily through applying individual expertise.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Bachelor’s degree plus two years of applicable experience, or combination of education and relevant work experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • Proficiency in basic business applications, such as Microsoft Office; user knowledge of Excel.
  • Basic knowledge of accounting systems and the internet; computer literacy.
  • Understanding of and ability to apply accounting skills and concepts.
  • Ability to draft professional e-mails, memos, business letters, and reports, and to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal audiences and client groups.
  • Ability to learn project management skills and to participate as part of a project team.
  • Demonstrated communication skills, including the ability to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal audiences and client groups.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks. 
  • Frequently sit, sort, file paperwork or parts, grasp lightly, and use fine manipulation, lift, carry, push and pull objects that weigh 10 pounds or less. 
  • Occasionally write by hand, twist, bend, stoop and squat. 
  • Rarely stand, walk, reach or work above shoulders and use a telephone.

The expected pay range for this position is $85,155.00 to $101,626.00 per annum.
