Academic Program Professional, CodeX, The Stanford Center for Legal Informatics About CodeX

CodeX – The Stanford Center for Legal Informatics is a leading research center at Stanford University dedicated to researching and developing technologies that improve the efficiency and accessibility of the legal system.  CodeX brings together computer scientists, lawyers, entrepreneurs, and policymakers to explore the future of law through computational and data-driven approaches. Our work spans legal AI, computational law, access to justice technologies, and the transformation of legal practice through innovation.

Position Overview

CodeX seeks an Academic Program Professional to play a central role in advancing our research, educational, and outreach initiatives. Working under the direction of faculty and staff leadership, you will help implement and administer CodeX's vision, strategy, and goals while serving as a key liaison between our academic programs, research activities, industry partnerships, and the broader legal technology ecosystem.

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated professional with strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills to contribute to cutting-edge work at the intersection of law, technology, and innovation.  You will report to Roland Vogl, Executive Director.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and administer research activities, academic programs and initiatives aligned with CodeX's mission. 

  • Evaluate program effectiveness through data collection and analysis; create reports and identify trends, make recommendations to achieve CodeX goals. Support faculty and researchers with data analysis, literature reviews, and research administration.

  • In consultation with Executive Director, Coordinate and implement programmatic changes and improvements.

  • May assist in teaching and administration of courses related to legal informatics and computational law.  Support curriculum development by making recommendations for course improvements.

  • Write and edit content for proposals, publications, reports, and other program materials under the general direction of the Executive Director and/or Faculty Directors.

  • Assist with the development of research grants, (i.e., may suggest new funding opportunities, write portions of grants, and/or summarize research findings and data for grant applications.

  • Contribute to peer-reviewed publications and white papers under faculty direction

  • Develop communications for internal and external constituencies, including newsletters, website content, and social media.

  • Serve as a key contact and subject matter expert for CodeX within Stanford Law School and externally.

  • Lead workshops and facilitate meetings with industry partners, government agencies, and academic collaborators.

  • Support fundraising efforts and stakeholder engagement activities.

  • Represent CodeX at legal technology conferences and professional gatherings

  • Organize and coordinate educational programming, including workshops, boot camps, and executive education offerings.

  • Organize and participate in outreach activities including conferences, symposia, workshops, and partnership events.

  • Monitor program budgets and expenses; make funding recommendations based on program needs and spend.

  • May oversee and train student workers, and research assistants. 


Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Required: Bachelor's degree and two years of relevant experience in program administration, research coordination, academic affairs, or related field; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience

  • Preferred: Advanced degree (Master's or J.D.) in law, computer science, or related field

  • Experience in academic program management, research administration, or legal technology strongly preferred

     

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated oral, written, and analytical skills with ability to collect, synthesize, and present data effectively

  • Exhibiting fluency in conveying complex technical and legal concepts to diverse audiences

  • Ability to oversee and provide basic direction to staff and students while working collaboratively with faculty, researchers, and external partners

     

    Certifications & Licenses

  • None required; relevant professional certifications in project management, research administration, or related areas are a plus

     

Desired Skills/Qualifications:

  • Experience in legal technology, legal innovation, or law and technology research

  • Familiarity with AI, machine learning, computational law, or data science applications in legal contexts

  • Grant writing experience and knowledge of federal and foundation funding mechanisms

  • Experience teaching, curriculum development, or educational program design

  • Network of contacts in the legal technology industry, law firms, legal departments, or legal tech startups

  • Previous experience at Stanford University or similar research institution

  • Foreign language skills (particularly for international research collaborations)

  • Program Management: Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced academic environment

  • Technical Proficiency: Comfort with learning and using technology tools; familiarity with legal technology, AI, or computational approaches a plus

  • Budget Management: Experience monitoring budgets and making fiscally responsible recommendations

  • Interpersonal Skills: Excellent relationship-building abilities; demonstrated success working with diverse stakeholders across academia, industry, and government

  • Initiative & Problem-Solving: Self-directed with strong organizational skills and ability to identify and resolve issues independently

Working Conditions

  • Standard business hours with flexibility for occasional extended hours, evenings, or weekends for events and conferences

  • Hybrid work arrangement available, minimum two days on campus (on-campus presence required for meetings, events, and collaboration)

  • Local travel required for Stanford-affiliated events and partner meetings

  • Occasional overnight travel for conferences and professional development (1-3 times per year)

The expected pay range for this position is $90,964 to $108,963 per annum.

Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of the salary the university reasonably expects to pay for a position upon hire. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
